  • Best finance podcast around

Can’t believe the criticism of this podcast! James Kirby not only gets access to financial advisors most of us never could, but he also lets listeners ask questions directly. As someone on the borderline of Millennial and Gen Z, I find it incredibly practical and insightful. Truly grateful for the service James provides to Australians’ financial literacy. Not sure why people bring politics into it.

  • It’s just OK

TLDR: Another Murdoch Empire stooge editorialising on right wing politics… I think I’m going to call time on the Money Puzzle. It’s much less entertaining since he split with Alan Kohler and has turned into a bit of a James Kirby waffle-fest. He brings on guests but often interrupts them to answers his own questions, goes off on tangents and waffling editorials and takes guesses at answering questions without knowing the answers. It’s still OK, just not great. If you’re pretty right wing and onl... more

  • What happened

I’ve listened to the money puzzle for years and its a shame the quality of content and guests is worsening over the years. You’ve lost a listener. It’s quite obvious the right wing bias of the Australian is getting to Kirby and co. Obvious sour grapes for this organisation that does not reflect the Aussie voter.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The typical traits of the Rich 250 in 2026
Q: Why is Nicola Forrest valued more than Andrew Forrest?
Nicola Forrest holds an additional 50 million Fortescue shares in her own name via Coaxial, which boosts her personal paper wealth relative to Andrew Forrest, while their broader wealth remains largely shared through joint investments.
Rates up, so should you fix your mortgage now?
Q: Kerry asks how the RBA's rate moves relate to energy costs and the housing market, and what the central bank should look through in inflation.
Stuart and James discuss that energy costs and rents contribute to inflation, with housing costs being a major driver. They note monetary policy is blunt and that disinflation in discretionary areas is required to offset non-discretionary rises, suggesting that policy must balance reducing inflation while avoiding excessive pain for borrowers.
Rates up, so should you fix your mortgage now?
Q: Eric asks for a discussion on insurance—whether most people actually need it and what self-insurance means.
Stuart emphasizes that most people likely carry too much insurance and that the decision should balance income protection with overall asset protection, insurance costs, and the ability to self-insure some risks. He notes insurance can be expensive, especially as one ages, and suggests tailoring coverage to actual risk and cash-flow needs rather than following insurers' broad recommendations.
Chris Judd on his new game: stock picking
Q: Trevor asks about the popularity of ETFs and whether the fund can outperform through active management amid ETF competition.
Judd responds that active management in small caps can outperform due to under-research and under-ownership, and explains how his fund adds value by rigorous, manager-level due diligence and nimble positioning relative to broad ETF exposure.
Chris Judd on his new game: stock picking
Q: Patrick asks about gold vs shares, and whether gold is an investment that pays off versus shares with franking credits and income.
Chris Judd argues gold isn't a traditional income-producing investment but has a long-standing secular role; he cautions against religious zeal in investing and emphasizes the broader context of diversification and tax considerations, while noting that gold has performed well in certain secular contexts.
