  • A tree-based tonic for our times!

I happened upon this podcast as I’m lucky enough to know some of the people being interviewed in the recent miniseries on Epping Forest. What a joy it was listening to people with real knowledge of the natural environments all around us speak with such passion and clarity - a real credit to Peter and the production team!

In a suffocating sea of political podcast sewage, this is a real tonic!

  • This is such a tonic to the daily dose of toxic news.

Fabulous stories from real people about restoring nature, planting trees, biodiversity, and getting our lives back in balance with the natural world. I have loved each and every episode, and only found one challenging, when you suggested Pete that you had 30 episodes in mind, that is definitely not enough, please continue! We have recently set up a new community group to map protect and regenerate the rainforests of Kintyre, in Argyll, and we get so much hope and encouragement from your podcasts... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Series 5 Episode 6 - Ecological Monitoring Mike Douglas
Q: How can you be sure that you're actually picking up that change as a real change and not just on a good day?
We combine periodic field surveys with long-term audio recordings; multiple visits plus continuous data reduce the risk of snapshot bias, and reporting includes breeding status to interpret habitat suitability.
Series 5 Episode 6 - Ecological Monitoring Mike Douglas
Q: So just talk us through what your findings are on those three surveys.
The Tee Bay bird survey shows increasing species richness as habitat structure becomes more complex; bats and aquatic invertebrates similarly show significant gains in their respective surveys, demonstrating multi-taxa responses to habitat management.
Series 6 Episode 2 Chris Clark at Nethergill Associates
Q: So tell me what SMO is and how it works.
MSO, or Maximum Sustainable Output, is the optimal balance where land management and energy from nature are used efficiently to sustain farm profitability without excessive inputs, aiming for a sweet spot rather than chasing yield alone.
Series 6 Episode 4 Sam and Emily Coppicing in Cumbria
Q: What are you doing here?
Sam explains coppicing as a practice that creates multi-stem regrowth by cutting at ground level, maintaining a living root system, and enabling a managed, cyclical harvest that supports products, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.
