Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

NTSP Specials (Season 2): Brendan and Helen
Q: What planning is involved when a child with a tracheostomy is going to the school, and how do you prepare for that transition?
Planning depends on notice; we train staff, assess funding and CHC needs, assign TAs with appropriate competencies, coordinate handovers from hospital teams, and adapt the classroom setup to accommodate tracheostomy equipment and ongoing needs.
NTSP Specials (Season 2): Brendan and Helen
Q: How much of your job is clinical, doing the speech and language interventions, and how much is everything else?
It fluctuates; I'm typically about 40% clinical and 60% management, but the balance shifts with demand and during busy periods, especially in winter.
NTSP Special Interviews (India 2026): Brendan & Sarah Part 1
Q: Tell us your thoughts on what you've seen in India.
The volume of patients and the sheer scale across centers is astonishing, with clinics seeing tens of thousands of patients and limited access to instrumental assessments; staff rely on bedside evaluations and face significant language and travel barriers, yet clinicians are incredibly dedicated and collaborative, continually sharing ideas to improve care and workflows.
NTSP Special Interviews (India 2026): Brendan & Sarah Full Conversation (Parts 1, 2 & 3)
Q: What would you take away from this trip apart from the hospital staff room?
The experience underscores the importance of collaboration, data collection, and culturally appropriate resources, with a clear potential to translate UK frameworks into India-specific resources and to empower local teams through shared learning and capacity building.
NTSP Special Interviews (India 2026): Brendan & Sarah Full Conversation (Parts 1, 2 & 3)
Q: From a speech and language therapy perspective, tell us your thoughts on what you've seen in India.
There is a huge volume of patients and a heavy reliance on bedside assessments due to limited access to instrumental tools, which challenges timely and comprehensive care but also drives resourcefulness and teamwork among clinicians.
