I look forward to this podcast every week! I listen to several personal finance podcasts but this is my favorite. Evon is spot on in his education of financial topics especially for an optometrist. Most of us do not have a finance background but regardless we need to know how to handle money! Each of these episodes are jam packed with knowledge you can use and apply to your situation. I am admittedly a proud and hard to please person but I can’t critique Evon negatively. Thank you for reading an... more

Profit Sharing Demystified: How Optometry Practice Owners Can Maximize Their 401(k) with Matt Ruttenberg
Q: What's the difference between a match and a profit-sharing contribution, and when might a non-elective safe harbor be preferable?
A match is a percentage of the employee deferral that the employer contributes, often used to incentivize employee participation. Profit sharing, including non-elective safe harbor, can fund discretionary contributions that are not tied to employee deferrals, and a non-elective safe harbor guarantees a minimum contribution to all employees, which can push more funds toward the owner and improve the plan's efficiency rating. This is advantageous when the owner wants predictable annual contributions while maintaining higher ownership rewards.
Profit Sharing Demystified: How Optometry Practice Owners Can Maximize Their 401(k) with Matt Ruttenberg
Q: Describe for the listener what profit sharing in a 401(k) plan is and why it matters for owners.
Profit sharing is an employer-funded contribution that comes from business profits, on top of the employee deferrals and any matching contributions. It can be tailored to prioritize the owner's tax planning or to balance benefits for the broader staff. The design choice—whether to maximize owner contributions or to favor employees—depends on goals, age and tenure of the workforce, and the overall profitability of the practice.
Listener Q&A: Practice Ownership, Backdoor Roths, and Student Loans
Q: Eric asks, I'm trying to do a 'backdoor' Roth IRA contribution for last year, which in this case would be 2025. If I do this in 2026, does it go on my 2025 tax return or 2026?
Both. The contribution to the traditional IRA for 2025 can be counted on the 2025 tax return, while the conversion to Roth, done in 2026, appears on the 2026 tax return, with each step being a separate transaction for tax purposes.
