  • Spreading hate

You should already know this by some of the call-ins you get, but there are many gardeners from the US who listen. The hateful things you continue to say and infer on the air about us is disappointing. What our govt does is not reflect all of its citizens. Shame on you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Peonies are Popular!
Q: What should I do with a honeysuckle plant when moving to a sixth-floor residence with pots?
The guidance is to move the plant in its pot if possible, using a wheeled dolly to relocate; if the plant is too large or stressed by transplantation, consider starting anew with a new plant on the balcony and pruning back the old plant before the move.
Peonies are Popular!
Q: Boxwood trouble with pests and possible blight; what should I look for and how can I treat it?
They advise inspecting for tiny insects or signs of boxwood moth damage, using BTK as a targeted spray, and distinguishing powdery mildew as unlikely; boxwood blight is a fungal issue with dark spots and defoliation and has no simple cure, so monitoring and targeted control are key.
Peonies are Popular!
Q: Peonies. What should I know about staking and rings vs collars for peonies?
The host explains that what many gardeners call a collar is actually a ring or peony ring, and that using a simple stake or tomato cage can help support top-heavy varieties without making the plant reliant on constant protection; peonies are herbaceous perennials and will regrow from the root each spring, so support should be about maintaining form rather than teaching endurance.
Tips for Supporting All Kinds of Nature in your Garden
Q: How do I stop squirrels from digging in planters?
Use PlantSkid on the mulch to trigger their fear response, consider shaking a liquid version for longevity, and refresh as needed; for ongoing issues also consider physical deterrents and garden layout changes.
When to Prune Clematis?
Q: Do you know what kind of Clematis the caller has?
The expert identifies it as likely a summer-flowering Clematis (commonly Jackmanii-type) and explains pruning timing: cut summer-flowering Clematis right after they flower; autumn/sweet autumn types are pruned after they bloom (late fall or early spring) to avoid losing that year's flowers.
