Talking Research: Research in Paramedic Primary Care - Brendan Shannon
Q: Could you maybe tell us a little bit more specifically about some of your research and what that focus has been and the outcomes from that and how that's impacted in this space as well would be really great.
Brendan outlines early honors work on non-transport outcomes, later PhD work on community paramedicine and outreach models, and the development of a framework/playbook for creating effective alternative care pathways using international data and collaborations.
Talking Research: Research in Paramedic Primary Care - Brendan Shannon
Q: And through your journey of research in this space, have you found perhaps some unique challenges that maybe don't exist in some other areas of research that have sort of maybe both impacted the types of questions you're asking, and maybe how you're asking them as well?
Brendan discusses data linkage challenges across ambulance, hospital, and primary care datasets, governance barriers, and the need to harmonize three silos to understand the full patient journey and the impact of alternative care pathways.
Talking Research: Research in Paramedic Primary Care - Brendan Shannon
Q: Absolutely. So you said you started off primarily as a clinician. Was there anything that I think maybe got you interested or also planted that seed to want to start along that research path?
Brendan explains that his interest in research grew from noticing gaps in knowledge during frontline practice, particularly around non-transport decisions, escalation pathways, and the need for better integration with broader care systems.

Q: Today, I'm joined by Brendan Shannon, and a big welcome to Brendan. Thank you so much for joining me today. Just to start us off, can you maybe just tell us a little bit about yourself, about your role in paramedicine and your research journey so far?
