  • Informative authentic supportive

It has been truly informative and helpful to hear Tara discuss so many areas with lead professionals who are making progress and new discoveries in areas hitherto closed off to neurodiverse people or indeed women. Best podcast I’ve listened to in a long long time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"Knitting is Therapeutic" Using Knitting for Mental Health With Dr Mia Hobbs
Q: What are some practical ways therapists can incorporate knitting into sessions or practice?
Therapists can introduce knitting as an accessible, low-barrier activity for clients who struggle with traditional talk therapy. It can be used to teach behavioral activation, regulate arousal, and support the therapeutic alliance by offering a concrete task that reflects progress. It's also useful for group settings and for clients who benefit from hands-on engagement, eye-contact-free conversation, and the boundary-setting that knitting naturally provides.
"Knitting is Therapeutic" Using Knitting for Mental Health With Dr Mia Hobbs
Q: How did knitting become something you consider therapeutic, and how did you bring it into therapy?
My personal journey with knitting began as a stress-relief activity during my doctoral training, evolving into a therapeutic tool as I saw its tangible sense of achievement and its ability to ground people in the present moment. In therapy, knitting is used alongside talk therapy to regulate emotions, provide a non-threatening way for clients to engage, and create a shared, concrete focus that can also facilitate talking about difficult topics.
Coping with trauma in the armed forces- with Major General Tim Hodgetts
Q: What role did poetry play in your coping strategy, and how has it influenced your work?
Poetry provided a reflective practice to bound and process difficult experiences. It helped me articulate lessons, share them publicly, and ultimately inspired the Frontlines and Lifelines project to help others process adversity through words.
Coping with trauma in the armed forces- with Major General Tim Hodgetts
Q: How did you translate battlefield experience into improvements for civilian trauma care?
I introduced standardized trauma governance, implemented weekly audits and case conferences, and built data-driven feedback loops that showed improvements in outcomes, which then informed broader NHS major trauma practices and the development of trauma centres.
Coping with trauma in the armed forces- with Major General Tim Hodgetts
Q: Can you walk us through a moment that defined your approach to crisis management on the ground?
A hospital bombing in Belfast in 1991 put me in charge of a temporary treatment facility. It taught me to build a rapid, repeatable system under extreme pressure, coordinate resources across units, and maintain calm so the team could function effectively.
