Thank you for producing this episode. Highly Recommended for all of us practitioners who deal with patients everyday.

I have a conscientious objection to this law, UNLESS the eligibility criteria will include Maximum palliative care input before a patient gets approval. If exceptional palliative care provision happens, then no one will actually need to use this law.

The BMA is not expecting massive changes for 26-27 to the basic GP contract, indicating limited changes seem likely.
GP contract predictions, uncertainty over neighbourhoods, tackling the GP jobs crisis
Q: What are the key developments expected in the GP contract?
The key developments include increased funding demands, changes in online consultation requirements, and the introduction of neighborhood contracts that could impact how services are delivered.
BONUS EPISODE: Understanding genetic kidney risk in South Asian populations - sponsored by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals
Q: What advice could you give to GPs to help them recognize when it might be those cases where they should be thinking about referring patients on to a nephrologist?
GPs should be on the lookout for recurrent kidney stones in younger patients, especially those from South Asian backgrounds, as these could indicate underlying genetic conditions like PH1.
BONUS EPISODE: Understanding genetic kidney risk in South Asian populations - sponsored by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals
Q: Can you give an example of a rare genetic kidney condition and what that might look like in practice for GPs?
One example is primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1), a severe condition that results from enzyme defects leading to oxalate overproduction, which is often underdiagnosed; GPs should look for recurrent kidney stones as a possible indicator.
BONUS EPISODE: Understanding genetic kidney risk in South Asian populations - sponsored by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals
Q: Why are your patients of South Asian origin more at risk here?
The risk of diabetes and hypertension in ethnic minority communities, particularly South Asians, is significantly higher, contributing to a higher incidence of chronic kidney disease and its progression.
