  • Simply outstanding

Surgical Ergonomics with Dr. Geeta Lal is an exceptional podcast. It is impeccably delivered and truly relatable across the board. As a fellowship trained neurologist in Headache Medicine, I specialize in treating chronic myofascial pain and spasm, headache disorders, cervicalgia, chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, etc. in my patients, by utilizing evidence-based injections. Dr. Lal’s podcast covers such a widespread and yet astoundingly underrepresented topic- I cannot emphasize enough how ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Developing a new ergonomic retractor with Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon Dr. Ramon Cestero
Q: Did you self-fund the innovation or do you have a biomedical engineering background?
The founder did not have a biomedical engineering degree. The path involved leveraging university support, patenting through the Office of Technology Commercialization, partnering with engineers, and eventually forming a company with external funding to bring the prototype to market.
Developing a new ergonomic retractor with Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon Dr. Ramon Cestero
Q: Could you tell us more about how the interest in retraction started in austere environments and how it ties into ergonomics and your innovation journey?
The need arose during deployments where traditional post-based and non-post retractor systems limited exposure and efficiency. By envisioning a device that combines the best attributes of Buchwalter and Balfour, the Titan retractor offers better exposure with less setup, while remaining compatible with blades clinicians already use, which accelerates adoption and reduces learning barriers.
OR Ergonomics from the Anesthsiology Perspective with Dr. Christopher Perkes
Q: What practical steps can other anesthesiologists take today to improve ergonomics in the OR?
Start with environmental scans, set up monitors and chairs to eye level, position the anesthesia machine to reduce twisting, and always enlist help for transfers while using gravity and transfer devices to minimize spinal load.
OR Ergonomics from the Anesthsiology Perspective with Dr. Christopher Perkes
Q: What were the main institutional or cultural barriers that delayed taking time off for recovery, and how did you navigate them?
There was internal pressure to continue working, as well as organizational demands in a small hospital setting; I weekended through until there was no choice but to step back, influenced by COVID and access to services.
OR Ergonomics from the Anesthsiology Perspective with Dr. Christopher Perkes
Q: Could you share how your ergonomics journey began and what injury sparked your interest in this area?
My interest started after an annular tear at L5S1 in 2018, which forced a year off work and made me realize how adjusting posture and workflow could dramatically improve recovery and long-term resilience.
