  • Excellent show

Nick Bryant is a level above. His intelligence, ability to cross subjects , passion for all subjects and variety of interviews make this a must listen. There’s hardly any of these shows left in the world be it print or radio. A must.

  • Fran is rude.

I find Fran to be quite rude to certain guests and, frankly, much less knowledgeable than Geraldine. What a shame. A must listen show has declined like so much of the ABC content has in the last decade.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Who wants 'the most impossible job in the world'?
Q: How have recent geopolitical dynamics affected the UN's relevance?
The UN has become more marginal as major powers engage in diplomacy outside the UN framework, and funding pressures—exacerbated by shifts in US support—have battered the organization, limiting its influence in crises.
Who wants 'the most impossible job in the world'?
Q: Why is the selection process so constrained by the P5 powers?
Any candidate must win the support of all five permanent members with veto power, which forces a compromised nominee acceptable to Washington, Beijing, Moscow, Paris, and London, often sidelining broader UN input.
Who wants 'the most impossible job in the world'?
Q: What does the Secretary General actually do in practical terms?
The SG spends most of their time on administration and budget negotiations, but there is a strong expectation they will act as a key political player—setting agendas on climate and mediating in wars—though the UN Charter provides limited guidance on how to perform that role.
What's it like on the ground in Lebanon right now?
Q: What are the legal and humanitarian implications of the ongoing attacks and displacement?
Weir emphasizes that even when Hezbollah fighters may be involved, Israel's obligations under international humanitarian law require protecting civilians and ensuring that attacks are discriminant and proportionate.
What's it like on the ground in Lebanon right now?
Q: Tell us what the situation is like on the ground in Lebanon.
Richard Weir describes widespread displacement, continued attacks in the south, destruction of crossings, and fear among residents with hundreds of thousands displaced and attempts to return despite infrastructure damage.
