  • Condescending 78-year-old interviewer

David Marr’s interview with Chris Hedges on 21 October is a worthwhile listen. It can’t be unheard.

If you like what Marr is doing in the interview, then keep on listening to this podcast.

On the other hand, if you occasionally listen to Marr and find his interview approach somewhat exasperating, then his interview with Hedges is definitely worth the listen. It is so excruciatingly bad.

Listening to the interview has been very validating. It’s unfortunate Marr has dropped to such lows.

David Marr is a very worthy presenter following in the footsteps of Philip Adams. Erudite , very witty and intelligent. I wished he was still on Insiders on Sunday mornings . Absolutely love his work .

  • I am glad David is back in 2025

David Marr is the best interviewer on radio. He is always well researched, has insightful questions and I love that he “doesn’t have an opinion” on any of the topics. Not to mention his West Pymble accent! What is not to like?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Brutal police killings in Rio's favelas shock the world as Brazil hosts climate summit
Q: Is it true that the police are paid bonuses for killing people?
Yes, a recent law allows for bonuses to police for killing suspects and seizing weapons, incentivizing violence instead of effective policing.
Brutal police killings in Rio's favelas shock the world as Brazil hosts climate summit
Q: Ana, is there an argument that so powerful are these gangs, that this is not civil policing as we understand it, that it is more like warfare?
Yes, the description of these groups as narco-terrorists is politically motivated, but the main objective of gangs is profit, not political ends.
Brutal police killings in Rio's favelas shock the world as Brazil hosts climate summit
Q: Ana, these close links make me wonder why something like Operation Containment was even mounted?
It appears to be politically motivated, as the governor needed to boost his approval ratings ahead of elections, and such operations are popular among the public despite their brutality.
Brutal police killings in Rio's favelas shock the world as Brazil hosts climate summit
Q: Is there any sort of informal relationship between these gangs and the government?
Yes, the gangs survive through informal and sometimes formal ties to politicians and security forces, which complicates law enforcement efforts against them.
Brutal police killings in Rio's favelas shock the world as Brazil hosts climate summit
Q: Tell us about the Red Command.
The Red Command is one of Brazil's oldest criminal groups, founded in the 1970s during Brazil's military dictatorship, originally for protection among inmates but evolved into a comprehensive crime syndicate involved in drug and arms trafficking.
