  • My LNL addiction remains

Partly due to illness, the (well deserved) retirement of Phillip Adam’s, I lost track of LNL for a while - in spite of my support for new host, David Marr.

Thanks to podcasts becoming my preferred medium these days in the late autumn of my life, I have managed to take up LNL again and while I have missed a bit, my life feels more for-filled - vitally important in such distressing times.

Thank you, David and thank you ABC.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Reckoning with war crimes, plus the women at the Nuremburg trials
Q: Did Erika Mann's reporting at the trial offer a different perspective because she was German and a woman?
The discussion notes that Erika Mann brought a humanizing, human-toll-focused perspective and that her exilic status and gender informed her reporting, offering a unique insight that complemented male-dominated coverage.
Reckoning with war crimes, plus the women at the Nuremburg trials
Q: Natalie, Harriet Zetterberg, who was she?
Natalie explains that Harriet Zetterberg was a Yale-educated forensic lawyer who built the American prosecutorial case, yet, due to the era's gender rules, she could not speak in court and had to hand pages to a male colleague to read aloud.
Roddy Doyle on a lifetime of writing the characters of Dublin
Q: What role does history play in your writing, especially when you're portraying events like the IRA period?
History is a scaffold; I use it to inform character choices and moral dilemmas, but I stay focused on the human experience—how people cope, make decisions, and seek meaning within turbulent times.
Roddy Doyle on a lifetime of writing the characters of Dublin
Q: Roddy, how deep down in yourself do you have to dig to find a character like Paula Spencer or the men in your novels?
You have to mine personal experiences—parenting, mortality, fear, and vulnerability—along with observations from everyday life, then anchor them in the particularities of Dublin and family dynamics to make the characters feel real and enduring.
Anna Henderson's Canberra, and translating Shakespeare
Q: What are the rules for translating Shakespeare into modern languages without losing its musicality?
The key is to create a coherent new language that preserves rhythm and the actor's experience, not just the literal meaning, and to allow the translated text to function as a performance piece as much as a literary one.
