  • Rodger Shanahn insights

It was good to get the perspective of a military view about operations. The personnel are doing the job based on the intelligence - that you hope is up to date.

Reporting the facts is always another view that needs to be appreciated especially those in the field.

Of course Peace everywhere would be preferable.

  • Love the Pod + Geraldine

I really value the perspective that Geraldine brings to the podcast. One of the reasons I am a regular listener of the pod is because it isn’t an echo chamber - the conversations challenge assumptions and encourage people to think more deeply about complex global issues.

Her comment about the Iranian people needing to find a way to rise up / find a solution has attracted criticism - and quite a strong response from Hamish- but I think it was pointing to a broader historial reality: meaningful a... more

  • Kim Ghattas interview

I learnt so much from Kim Ghattas. What an amazing person. I’m not sure of your defence of Israel’s actions Geraldine and the justification for war because they are scared of those surrounding them. Netanyahu’s trigger happy pre-emptive strike mentally certainly breeds contempt from the ones being shot at. Sure the Arab states could have done more but asking the victims to come up with the solution is a bit thick when they can barely come up for air without fear for their lives.

  • Wanted to like it

Hamish is great, balanced asked difficult questions and makes you think. Geraldine is the complete opposite. No critical thinking skills, blubbering boomer energy. I wanted to like the show. The other presenters are great. Geraldine’s comments pretty much endorsing Israel’s actions and saying we need to think outside the box are insane.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Iran became Trump's 'Operation Epic Folly'
Q: President Trump has named this campaign against Iran Epic Fury. You have called it Epic Folly. Why so?
Haass argues that there was no clear new threat justifying a war of choice, and that the urgency and pathway to achieving goals were not adequately demonstrated, making diplomacy and measured pressure more appropriate than rushed military action.
Your Call: The history of China the CCP would rather not tell
Q: George asks whether it's true that the Chinese remember the humiliation by the Western powers and whether that motivates a long-term desire for revenge.
Frank responds that while the sense of humiliation is a powerful propaganda thread, the average farmer is more concerned with immediate life conditions than distant historical traumas, though the revenge narrative does exist as a political tool.
These are Iran's emerging power players
Q: Can you tell us a bit more about Ali Baba and why he's seen as a potential leader figure in Iran?
Ali Baba is portrayed as a power broker with a mix of military background, technocratic tendencies, and a long-standing ambition to lead Iran, but his potential viability depends on his ability to soften social repression and to present a credible regional and international strategy that would appeal to both Iranians and Western partners.
Is cultural heritage an overlooked casualty of war?
Q: How important is 3D scanning in preserving heritage, and can it help if originals are lost?
She answered that 3D scanning is crucial for documenting interior details and architectural nuances that would be hard to capture manually, enabling accurate reconstruction and study even if the physical object is destroyed.
Is cultural heritage an overlooked casualty of war?
Q: Basia, how do you make the decision about what art to prioritise and evacuate first?
She described a planning process similar to home emergency planning: identify the most symbolically important and historically valuable pieces, determine how to store or transport them, and run drills with staff and volunteers so evacuation can happen quickly under pressure.
