  • Rodger Shanahn insights

It was good to get the perspective of a military view about operations. The personnel are doing the job based on the intelligence - that you hope is up to date.

Reporting the facts is always another view that needs to be appreciated especially those in the field.

Of course Peace everywhere would be preferable.

  • Love the Pod + Geraldine

I really value the perspective that Geraldine brings to the podcast. One of the reasons I am a regular listener of the pod is because it isn’t an echo chamber - the conversations challenge assumptions and encourage people to think more deeply about complex global issues.

Her comment about the Iranian people needing to find a way to rise up / find a solution has attracted criticism - and quite a strong response from Hamish- but I think it was pointing to a broader historial reality: meaningful a... more

  • Kim Ghattas interview

I learnt so much from Kim Ghattas. What an amazing person. I’m not sure of your defence of Israel’s actions Geraldine and the justification for war because they are scared of those surrounding them. Netanyahu’s trigger happy pre-emptive strike mentally certainly breeds contempt from the ones being shot at. Sure the Arab states could have done more but asking the victims to come up with the solution is a bit thick when they can barely come up for air without fear for their lives.

  • Wanted to like it

Hamish is great, balanced asked difficult questions and makes you think. Geraldine is the complete opposite. No critical thinking skills, blubbering boomer energy. I wanted to like the show. The other presenters are great. Geraldine’s comments pretty much endorsing Israel’s actions and saying we need to think outside the box are insane.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Trump and the Iran ceasefire: what happens next?
Q: Is there a credible path to a durable settlement, or is this likely to be a temporary pause that leaves room for future escalation?
Watling argues that while a two-week pause could buy time for negotiations, the lack of a robust, legally binding framework and the absence of credible regional actors to enforce it risk a fragile, short-term truce that could collapse if either side perceives an opportunity for advantage or if regional players feel the gains are not secured.
Trump and the Iran ceasefire: what happens next?
Q: What are the overriding objectives for Iran and the United States if a ceasefire is possible, and where are the biggest points of difference?
Dr. Watling explains that U.S. military aims focus on degrading Iran's missile production, naval capabilities, and, to some extent, its nuclear program, while Iran's priorities would center on preserving its strategic autonomy and reducing external pressure, with the Strait of Hormuz being a central leverage point. Differences lie in acceptable security guarantees and the long-term political settlement that would satisfy both sides' red lines.
Greater Israel: Is Netanyahu pursuing an expansionist dream?
Q: By the end of the year, what forces will shape the elections and will Netanyahu prevail?
The interviewer notes that the forces will be a contest between Netanyahu emphasizing military advances and regional power, versus opposition arguments about governance and occupation; polls consistently show the coalition lacking a majority, though coalition fragmentation and taboos around Palestinian statehood complicate predictability.
Soft power, hard lesson: what can Australia learn from unhappy Asian students?
Q: So what have you been hearing in terms of Australia's reputation as a destination for education, particularly university education?
Damien Cave explains that while Australia remains popular, many recent international students and newer alumni feel the experience is overpriced and lacking in a sense of belonging, contrasting with earlier generations who valued the education more. He emphasizes that student satisfaction is low relative to the price and that universities' large scales can undermine community and integration.
The Matter of Facts: Why our brains are vulnerable to disinformation
Q: What can individuals do to protect themselves from misinformation?
Engage in deep reading where possible, develop habits for critical analysis, and cultivate awareness of how information is presented, while seeking diverse sources and evidentiary support.
