Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 400: E-commerce returns and sustainability
Q: How do you define serial returners and why is this distinction important?
Serial returners are defined as customers who return at least half of what they buy online. This distinction matters because they drive a disproportionate share of emissions and costs from returns, suggesting that targeted policies and retailer practices could yield outsized environmental and economic benefits.
Ep 400: E-commerce returns and sustainability
Q: What are the latest trends in e-commerce returns according to your research?
Online purchases and returns are both increasing; however, online fashion shows particularly high return rates, with 15-20% or more of online clothing orders being returned—significantly higher than in-store returns. The study also highlights the existence of serial returners who return roughly half of what they buy online.
Ep 399: Middle mile and last mile technology
Q: What are some concrete tech innovations you've implemented or tested to improve throughput in the sorting center and along the delivery chain?
RFID at dock doors, machine vision for faster and more reliable scans, and AI-driven confirmation like picture proof of delivery which speeds up doorstep checks and reduces time per stop.
Ep 397: DHL eCommerce Americas CEO Scott Ashbaugh
Q: How does technology, especially AI, fit into your hub operations?
AI is used for back-office functions and selective hub operations, with robotics and vision systems aiding piece-picking, while human labor remains crucial during peak hours and for complex tasks.
Ep 397: DHL eCommerce Americas CEO Scott Ashbaugh
Q: What levels of injection into the USPS network are available and which are primarily used now?
The model supports various levels, from upstream LPC injections to downstream DDUs, with a current emphasis on LPCs to align with USPS network changes and efficiency goals.
