  • Raines = brought the pod down

Love the pod but the Jack Raines episode is horrendous advice for anyone not going to a M7 MBA in their late 20s

  • Alcohol = Socializing?

Love the show. But are you and Derek Thompson seriously advocating for drinking moderate alcohol and doing regular exercise as a way of extending life? Why must “alcohol” = “socializing”? How about going out late and meeting a friend for a non-alcoholic drink? Being concerned that young people “aren’t drinking enough” is missing the point entirely. The point is, “be with people” plain and simple. The point is not “drink alcohol and be with people.”

  • Please Finish a Thought …

I give up. I can’t stand Scott’s rambling + not finishing a thought + pontificating on brain farts on subjects he’s simply not thought through enough and/or he’s not qualified to speak about. If I could rate this 0 stars I would. I used to like Scott a lot but since his book came out, his ego has exploded.

  • I can’t listen to Alice Han’s china-biased commentary

I invite diversity of opinions but I find the co-host to be so intellectually dishonest in her knee-jerk bias towards China that it renders the entire effort unlistenable. The trust in the commentary has become wholly absent

Do Ivy League Degrees Actually Matter? Plus, When to Rent vs. Buy
Q: Generally speaking, what you find with small firms is that, the best people at Harvard, MIT, and Stanford are going to work for hedge funds, tech companies that are scaling. They weren't going to work for small companies like mine. What would you do to find top talent outside Ivy Leagues?
Identify the top 10% at local universities, build connections locally, and use reference hiring to tap networks; prioritize practical excellence over name-brand pedigree.
Inside the Anti-Social Century — with Derek Thompson
Q: Is centrism sustainable? Do the algorithms encourage people to go to the polls? And is there a place or a home for centrists that still exist in America?
Centrism is not dead; it exists as a policy set and a vibe, with potential as a balanced approach that combines private enterprise with measured government role, though its appeal varies by digital space and generation.
How Much Money Is Enough? Plus, Why AI Won’t Replace Financial Advisors — with Jack Raines
Q: Will there be a need for wealth advisors as AI tools develop over time?
AI can assist with trades and information, but advisors are valuable for behavioral guidance, emotional management, and complex financial planning; demand for advisors may grow as AI handles routine tasks, with the human element remaining essential.
How Much Money Is Enough? Plus, Why AI Won’t Replace Financial Advisors — with Jack Raines
Q: How should young people go about saving for a house in a high cost city?
The guests discuss doing the math on whether homeownership makes sense, considering city costs, and whether renting and maintaining mobility might be wiser; ownership has psychological returns but can lock you in financially, so evaluate lifestyle goals and long-term plans.
How Much Money Is Enough? Plus, Why AI Won’t Replace Financial Advisors — with Jack Raines
Q: Is there such a thing as enough wealth?
Jack argues there is enough wealth, but the real challenge is resisting the habit of keeping up with those just a notch ahead, and recognizing that happiness comes more from relationships and meaningful use of wealth rather than inflating the number.
