  • Erudite and in depth…. But where are the women?

Love having these deep dives into religious history—but so many of these scholars are men. Maybe it’s a problem with academia or cafe mic publishing, and this podcast is just reflecting it. But there’s either a systematic problem, or a systemic one.

  • too much poor sound in some conversations

Many interesting discussions- but why is the sound quality so poor in some of the phone interviews? It sounds like they were recorded from low quality VoIP lines on a noisy cell phone connection. Surely in an age of digital communications it shouldn't be so hard to record a phone conversation that doesn't sound like its coming through a distortion system muffled through a blanket.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An-Ting Yi, "From Erasmus to Maius: The History of Codex Vaticanus in New Testament Textual Scholarship" (de Gruyter, 2024)
Q: Why is Maius's printing project significant for Codex Vaticanus's authority?
Yi argues that the Maius edition made Codex Vaticanus portable and widely accessible, but also notes issues of accuracy and the broader Catholic-Protestant tensions that influenced reception; nonetheless, printed editions amplified authority while introducing new challenges.
An-Ting Yi, "From Erasmus to Maius: The History of Codex Vaticanus in New Testament Textual Scholarship" (de Gruyter, 2024)
Q: How did Lackmann change the authority of Codex Vaticanus in the 19th century?
Lackmann is presented as instrumental in applying a more contemporary critical mindset, using methods from classical scholarship and treating the manuscript as a work in progress, which helped establish Codex Vaticanus as a foundation for later critical editions.
An-Ting Yi, "From Erasmus to Maius: The History of Codex Vaticanus in New Testament Textual Scholarship" (de Gruyter, 2024)
Q: What motivated you to shift attention from the manuscript itself to the history of how it has been judged?
Yi explains that the book aims to narrate the stories surrounding the manuscript and trace how scholarly judgments, rather than only the text, shape its authority, showing a reception history approach.
Amy D. McDowell, "Whispers in the Pews: Evangelical Uniformity in a Divided America" (NYU Press, 2026)
Q: How does race and gender play into the church's dynamics?
Race and gender shape participation and leadership, with Be the Bridge revealing tensions around race while gender norms reinforce patriarchal expectations, showing how conversations are managed to avoid conflict.
Amy D. McDowell, "Whispers in the Pews: Evangelical Uniformity in a Divided America" (NYU Press, 2026)
Q: Why study Welcome Church as a case study for small talk and biblical sameness?
Welcome Church provides a clear, ground-level setting where a diverse, multi-ethnic aim collides with broader evangelical norms, revealing how small talk sustains inclusion while masking underlying power dynamics.
