  • Sleep Inducing

Generally excellent topic choices. But this guy often seems half-asleep. And when he has a guest who tends to drone—like the man who spoke about Satie—the consequence is dreary. Then again, perhaps the droning (or the subject) itself drained the moderator of enthusiasm.

  • Density and Conversational Flow

The guests and substance are always intellectually rich, engaging and well framed but it’s the way James keeps the conversation flowing naturally through his own curiosity and productive banter style that makes this pod addictive - always on point but still always organic in tone, pace, dialectic

Although the material covered may be a bit heavy or hard for me to follow on first take I appreciate how he doesn’t interrupt the flow or lower the conversational level of the guest to describe all th... more

  • Hope Isn’t the Only Lens

Ever since James’ conversion experience, he denigrates anything with overt themes of pessimism or nihilism. While recognizing he’s found meaning through Christianity, this does not necessarily invalidate anything with an opposing view of existence.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Psychosis Is Not So Crazy / Lacan, Language, and Madness as Possibility with Stijn Vanheule
Q: Is that the biggest shift you aim for with your book, repositioning non-specialists toward viewing psychosis as a starting point for relationships and meaning, rather than a final end?
Yes, the book seeks to present psychosis as a difficult but potentially generative path, emphasizing encounters, social bonds, and hopeful avenues for families to support individuals through meaningful engagement rather than simply aiming for a cure.
Why Psychosis Is Not So Crazy / Lacan, Language, and Madness as Possibility with Stijn Vanheule
Q: Is there always a precipitating event for psychosis, and how does the subject difference before and after an event look in Lacanian terms?
There can be triggering life events that challenge the sense of self, but concrete cases vary; Lacan emphasizes the foreclosure of the name of the father and the intrusion of the real as central to the psychotic shift.
Why Psychosis Is Not So Crazy / Lacan, Language, and Madness as Possibility with Stijn Vanheule
Q: So you are drawing on figures that often aren't seen as accessible, especially Lacan. What do non-specialist readers, families, and caregivers need from psychoanalytic theory that the specialist often loses?
The guest suggests psychoanalysis offers listening to psychosis and attention to unconscious processes, providing a framework to take patients' experiences seriously and explore subjective meaning beyond purely biomedical explanations.
Turning Away from the World / The Poetics of an Ancient Gesture with Benjamin A. Saltzman
Q: Is this gesture always negative, or can it have positive or nuanced meanings?
Saltzman argues that the gesture is not inherently negative; it can be linked to grief and contemplation, and in some contexts serves as a deliberate, reflective action necessary for processing difficult realities.
Günther Anders 'The Obsolescence of the Human' with Christopher John Müller
Q: What makes translating Anders particularly challenging for this book?
Muller explains that Anders' voice and narrative tonality shift across chapters, requiring careful calibration to preserve the text's epic, sometimes archaic mood while still making it intelligible in English.
