I love this podcast, but I now rarely listen due to Aari Barbalatt. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but he’s a terrible interviewer and kills interest in even the most interesting books! Please find someone else!!

  • a very uneven podcast

Sometimes excellent, if the interviewer lets the guest talk or if he knows something about the guest’s topic. When the host just reads from a pre-fab list of questions no matter what the guest answers, then it’s a weak episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Avner Greif et al., "Two Paths to Prosperity: Culture and Institutions in Europe and China, 1000–2000" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Where can people find your work and what might you work on next?
Guido Tabellini points listeners to his continued research in political economy and European integration, with the idea that Europe's common features and strategic challenges will shape future research, especially in an increasingly interdependent world where nation-states may become less dominant. He also notes that his future work may move beyond pure economic history toward understanding Europe's integration dynamics in a changing global landscape.
Avner Greif et al., "Two Paths to Prosperity: Culture and Institutions in Europe and China, 1000–2000" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: What are the core reasons behind Europe overtaking China according to your analysis?
The core reasons center on Europe's fragmentation, which limited centralized control and allowed private associations, guilds, and early forms of corporations to evolve democratic-like decision-making and contract enforcement. This environment fostered independent inquiry, faster knowledge accumulation, and the emergence of a legal framework that supported the Industrial Revolution more readily than China's centralized, clan-based, meritocratic system.
Colloquies on European Civil Procedure: A Conversation with Marco de Benito
Q: What do you hope readers, including policymakers, take away from this collection?
Readers should gain a sense of how best practices in civil procedure can be identified through comparative dialogue, see how different traditions can converge on practical solutions, and use the dialogue as a reference for reform debates, drafting, and scholarly inquiry across Europe.
Colloquies on European Civil Procedure: A Conversation with Marco de Benito
Q: How did you approach producing the book and inviting contributions from scholars?
I leveraged the Jean Monnet Chair to gather leading scholars, invited participants to engage in dialogue across drafts, and actively mixed insider perspectives from working groups with outsider interpretations to produce a dynamic, collaborative compilation that reads like a modern colloquy rather than a traditional anthology.
Colloquies on European Civil Procedure: A Conversation with Marco de Benito
Q: Can you talk about what harmonization means in this context?
Harmonization means developing a shared, best-practice framework for civil procedure that respects diverse traditions across Europe, rather than imposing a single uniform system; it involves soft law, cross-jurisdictional dialogue, and collaborative editorial input to create a coherent set of principles and procedures.
