Your Life Changes When Your Beliefs Do with Shawn Achor and Oprah
Q: What beliefs are you holding back, and can beliefs change in adults?
Beliefs can change; entrenched beliefs may shift with new experiences, especially when supported by social connection and meaningful events, though it can be challenging and uneven.
Mara Brock Akil’s New Novel About Betrayal, Shame & Redemption with Oprah
Q: Why did you choose to open the book with a train scene and the HIV test?
The train setting creates immediacy and isolation while the HIV test countdown frames the book's structure around truth-telling, memory, and the consequences of past trauma on present relationships.
Mara Brock Akil’s New Novel About Betrayal, Shame & Redemption with Oprah
Q: Do you mind sharing what actually happened to you?
Mara explains that the book channels her own experiences of abuse and uses fiction to explore interior truth, with memory and healing central to the narrative and to her artistic process.
Sophie Chen Keller: "Little Wonder" | Oprah's Book Club
Q: What inspired the braid narrative structure for Song and River's story?
I kept seeing the need for multiple perspectives to prevent one-dimensional storytelling. The braid idea came to me visually, and when I braided A (Song present), B (Song past), and C (River's perspective) in alternating patterns, the pieces fell into place and the emotional and thematic threads aligned.
The Dark Side of AI Chatbots: Warning Signs, Risks, and Reality
Q: What can be done at a policy level to curb these risks?
Push for laws requiring testing and safeguards before deployment, create incentives for responsible company practices, and empower parents with education and accessible resources.
