The addiction to computer gaming is not mentioned. Unemployed young people living at home with income from government are kept under addiction to these games. Impact on brain will be noticed ten years from now. Just like smoking and alcohol.

Tyler: Exile On Main Street is “ MUSH” !

Exile scored 11 Number-One hit singles across their career, reaching the top of both pop and country charts.

You sir, are an idiot. And so is the quest whose Rolling Stones book is filled with errors.

  • Excellent!

Can’t believe I’m just discovering this. Tyler is a great interviewer who asks a great number of interesting questions and allows his guests to share their knowledge without interruption. I walk away from each episode having learned something, and very much enjoy the breezy, conversational tone of the discussion. Bravo!

  • Great podcast

I learn something (often many things) every time I listen to one of Professor Cowen’s interviews. The guests are interesting and the conversations are great. As a high school social science teacher, there is always something from these episodes that I can use in class. I highly recommend this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Chase Koch on Principles, Music, and Overcoming Entropy
Q: Can you explain how Stand Together Music was born and what it aims to achieve?
Stand Together Music was born during COVID as a way to leverage music to drive social change, partnering with artists to address issues like criminal justice reform and education reform, using platforms like Zoom to reach broad audiences and create impact.
Joel Mokyr on Clans, Corporations, and a Culture of Growth
Q: Start by telling us, in the book, your thesis is about European corporations vs. Chinese clans and the importance of that difference. How would you explain it?
The core idea is that Europe developed non-kin networks to produce local public goods like education, religious services, and autonomous cities, which effectively created corporations that could coordinate among unrelated individuals. In China, the extended clan remained the organizing unit, and the imperial bureaucracy often partnered with those clans, limiting the formation of similar corporate structures.
Katja Hoyer on Weimar, the GDR, and the German Character
Q: Why did the Weimar Constitution fail so decisively?
She outlines multiple factors: flaws in proportional representation, emergency powers (Article 48), the rushed postwar constitution born of crisis, economic turmoil, and the susceptibility of a fragile democracy to extremist hijacking, all contributing to a brittle system.
Katja Hoyer on Weimar, the GDR, and the German Character
Q: Before the wall came down, how happy or unhappy do you think East Germans were?
Her conclusion is that happiness varied by personal circumstance; many lived a decent life but feared divergence from state-approved paths, and the Stasi created a climate where social life could be monitored and strained depending on one's associations.
Katja Hoyer on Weimar, the GDR, and the German Character
Q: Let me start with East Germany more generally. Why was it that communism seems to have made the Poles and Romanians more anti-communist, but it made the East Germans overall more communist?
The guest explains that in East Germany the system built a pervasive state apparatus, with strong historical precedents from autocratic rule and the Stasi's reach, which fostered a culture of conformity. However, there were pockets of nuance; some artists and intellectuals found space to critique the state, while the overall social environment tended toward compliance.
