There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous i... more

Delightfully fucked up
I kept forgetting to review BTB but I have a second to do so now: I listened to this for a few years but I had to stop because of robert. There are other, more thoughtful, more vigorously researched podcasts out there whose host acknowledge and take seriously all forms of oppression and how they exacerbate one another. As a Black american that’s important to me but it should also be important to a show talking about HISTORY and its impact on the present. This podcast, like too many other ‘progr... more
This popped up in my recommendations and sounded right up my alley. Started with SEAL Team 6 Ep 1 and only made it 16 minutes. I’m normally one who enjoys unscripted banter from the hosts, but this just wasn’t working for me. The only way I can think to describe it is like someone reading a Reddit thread out loud to me. Robert and the script carry the show, ad breaks are what they are and easily skipped, and overall the topics covered are interesting which Ive enjoyed.

This show blends historical deep-dives with sharp, often irreverent cultural commentary. Across episodes, listeners encounter thorough explorations of infamous figures, political movements, and controversial historical episodes, paired with candid discussions about media, power, and persuasion. A standout is its willingness to connect glittering, high-profile narratives to darker undercurrents like manipulation, money, and propaganda, all delivered with brisk pacing and a penchant for pop-culture framing. It's likely to appeal to history buffs and critical thinkers who enjoy provocative storytelling, long-form analysis, and robust guest perspectives. A notable trait is the mix of meticulous archival detail with modern commentary, making it ... more
