There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous i... more

Sophie, did you know it’s rude to interrupt when someone is speaking?
Honestly think this would be better as a one-person show. I turned this on because I wanted to hear a good, well-researched story, and then remembered that I can only get that if I sit through the mind-numbing process of two other people trying to get a (usually unhelpful) word in. This issue would be resolved, I feel, if the show were just Robert and someone else—either Sophie or a rotating selection of guests.
I love Robert's twisted sense of humor and the in depth history of despots, dictators and corrupt institutions. But I will only give it 4 stars because of the It Could Happen Here episodes. It's cluttering up my feed and needs its own subcategory.
Edited to add: Sophie does a lovely job of reining Robert in. I love hearing her insight. So leave her alone!
It's possible I haven't listened to enough episodes to have a fully fleshed-out opinion, but I have to ask, what is the purpose of the guests? The few episodes I've listened to begin with a random guest promoting their book, and then they just pipe in with the occasional "wow... disgusting". Robert is extremely well researched, and then he has to pause to explain to his guest that "bird" was a common word for "woman" in Britain. Like, seriously? If they know nothing about the subject, why are th... more
Good stuff. I really love the podcast. Robert is funny, clearly brilliant, and also an idiot in the best way. A fun idiot, the “watch this hold my beer” type. I would shoot a gun w bro and I really don’t like guns. Majority of the guests are great too…. Idk if podcasters even read these, bc it seems that A LOT of others feel the same way. —I’m not a cis-man. I don’t think it’s fair to jump to misogyny when a woman is given feedback. —But fr in the nicest most loving way possible pls less Sophie.... more

This show blends historical deep-dives with sharp, often irreverent cultural commentary. Across episodes, listeners encounter thorough explorations of infamous figures, political movements, and controversial historical episodes, paired with candid discussions about media, power, and persuasion. A standout is its willingness to connect glittering, high-profile narratives to darker undercurrents like manipulation, money, and propaganda, all delivered with brisk pacing and a penchant for pop-culture framing. It's likely to appeal to history buffs and critical thinkers who enjoy provocative storytelling, long-form analysis, and robust guest perspectives. A notable trait is the mix of meticulous archival detail with modern commentary, making it ... more
