  • Love it

Paying for ad-free makes this a much better experience. If you love history and learning about the worst people, this is your new favorite. Plus Robert has been at it for years so there’s a big backlog to dig into

  • Way too many adds

Too many ad breaks with too many ads just take away from the actual content. Also has trouble following the story in between the “banter”

  • If Sophie were a biblical entity I would drink that cool aid immediately

The comments gave me heart problems, I can smell the Cheeto puffs on yalls neck beards through the screen. I love this podcast and all the input from everyone on it! It gets me through some long days at work. Please never stop!

  • Producer interrupts too much

I agree with a lot of the sentiment here. Robert is an awesome researcher with a great knack for podcasting. The producer Sophie is essentially a co-host now and interrupts constantly. Her contributions are often unfunny, unneeded, or downright sexist. This has gotten worse in the past year or so.

Recently I’ve been listening to episodes and shutting them off half way through once I’ve had my fill off it.

Other cool zone shows don’t have the producer constantly interrupting the podcast. Why... more

  • Sophie

Sophie is brilliant at stating the obvious. Good job I tried to listen to the podcast but Sophie interrupted so often with nonsense.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

It Could Happen Here Weekly 231
Q: What risks do journalists face in Lebanon according to the interviewee, and how is this affecting reporting?
Journalists face direct killings, double-tap strikes, threats via text messages, and a broader culture of impunity; this has led to self-censorship, restricted access to front-line areas, and a chilling effect that hampers independent reporting.
It Could Happen Here Weekly 231
Q: What were Quentin Deranque's backgrounds and affiliations, and how did they shape perceptions of him after his death?
He was a student with deep involvement in Catholic traditionalism and several neo-Nazi groups; his online posts and associations show a highly ideological and radical trajectory, which complicates the portrayal of him as merely a peaceful activist. The hosts emphasize that his death was used by fascist groups to craft a martyr narrative, while critics point to his explicit racist and anti-Semitic content.
Part One: How AI Chatbots Became Cult Leaders
Q: What parallels exist between AI psychosis and traditional cult recruitment tactics?
AI-driven interactions can mirror cult recruitment patterns such as love bombing, isolation from real-world relationships, and sustained engagement, not because the AI intends harm, but because its design optimizes user retention and belief alignment.
Part One: How AI Chatbots Became Cult Leaders
Q: How did early chatbots influence people's perception of machine intelligence?
Early chatbots like Eliza created a convincing sense of understanding through scripted responses, showing how pattern matching and Rogerian dialogue could fool humans into relating to machines as if they were persons.
It Could Happen Here Weekly 229
Q: What is the Palestine exception to free speech and how does it affect campus discourse?
It is described as structural constraints inside universities that make it difficult to discuss Palestine, leading to a chilling effect where open discussion about related issues is curtailed and anti-Palestinian rhetoric is quickly deployed to shut down pro-Palestinian speech.
