  • Great info, terrible producer.

Sophie, did you know it’s rude to interrupt when someone is speaking?

  • Headache-inducing

Honestly think this would be better as a one-person show. I turned this on because I wanted to hear a good, well-researched story, and then remembered that I can only get that if I sit through the mind-numbing process of two other people trying to get a (usually unhelpful) word in. This issue would be resolved, I feel, if the show were just Robert and someone else—either Sophie or a rotating selection of guests.

  • One of my favorite pods

I love Robert's twisted sense of humor and the in depth history of despots, dictators and corrupt institutions. But I will only give it 4 stars because of the It Could Happen Here episodes. It's cluttering up my feed and needs its own subcategory.

Edited to add: Sophie does a lovely job of reining Robert in. I love hearing her insight. So leave her alone!

  • What's with the guests?

It's possible I haven't listened to enough episodes to have a fully fleshed-out opinion, but I have to ask, what is the purpose of the guests? The few episodes I've listened to begin with a random guest promoting their book, and then they just pipe in with the occasional "wow... disgusting". Robert is extremely well researched, and then he has to pause to explain to his guest that "bird" was a common word for "woman" in Britain. Like, seriously? If they know nothing about the subject, why are th... more

  • Great podcast

Good stuff. I really love the podcast. Robert is funny, clearly brilliant, and also an idiot in the best way. A fun idiot, the “watch this hold my beer” type. I would shoot a gun w bro and I really don’t like guns. Majority of the guests are great too…. Idk if podcasters even read these, bc it seems that A LOT of others feel the same way. —I’m not a cis-man. I don’t think it’s fair to jump to misogyny when a woman is given feedback. —But fr in the nicest most loving way possible pls less Sophie.... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Part One: Mark Fuhrman: The Most Racist Cop, or Merely Normal Racist Cop?
Q: What role did Fuhrman play in the OJ Simpson case and the surrounding publicity?
The hosts argue Fuhrman's racist reputation and the tapes released later significantly undermined the prosecution's case by casting doubt on the integrity of the evidence and police work, contributing to Simpson's acquittal and triggering a broader scrutiny of LAPD practices.
It Could Happen Here Weekly 234
Q: How did the union organizing accelerate so quickly?
Two initial meetings built momentum: a swift vote to form the union at the first gathering, followed by a second meeting with union representatives that confirmed ongoing support and allowed onboarding with a preferred union, enabling rapid escalation.
Part One: The Orgasm Cult
Q: How does Hildegard of Bingen fit into the discussion of sex and power?
Hildegard is discussed as an historical counterpoint whose writings on female sexuality are described as prototypical in understanding women's sexual agency, which the hosts connect to the later moral and medical narratives around sex in Western history, including modern reclamations of female pleasure.
It Could Happen Here Weekly 231
Q: What risks do journalists face in Lebanon according to the interviewee, and how is this affecting reporting?
Journalists face direct killings, double-tap strikes, threats via text messages, and a broader culture of impunity; this has led to self-censorship, restricted access to front-line areas, and a chilling effect that hampers independent reporting.
It Could Happen Here Weekly 231
Q: What were Quentin Deranque's backgrounds and affiliations, and how did they shape perceptions of him after his death?
He was a student with deep involvement in Catholic traditionalism and several neo-Nazi groups; his online posts and associations show a highly ideological and radical trajectory, which complicates the portrayal of him as merely a peaceful activist. The hosts emphasize that his death was used by fascist groups to craft a martyr narrative, while critics point to his explicit racist and anti-Semitic content.
