Q: Before we finished our conversation, I wanted to get Luis's view on the drugs trade as it stands today, and what he thinks the answer is.
Navia discusses legalization as a potential method to control supply and reduce violence, arguing for regulated production and quotas while acknowledging the complexity of transitioning from prohibition to a controlled system.
18: Crocodiles, Pablo Escobar and 300 Tonnes of Cocaine: Luis Navia In His Own Words
Q: I certainly know one podcast won't cover your entire story, Luis, but could I start at the beginning?
Navia outlines his Cuba-rooted upbringing, Georgetown education, and early Miami experiences that connected him to the drug world, setting the stage for a rapid ascent into international cocaine logistics.
14: The World's Second Oldest Profession
Q: You said to me that smuggling was the second oldest profession. Just how old is it?
Smuggling goes back to ancient times and is tied to the movement of borders and taxes; it's rooted in long-standing cultural practices and has persisted through multiple eras, evolving in method but not in core purpose.
6: Gunfights and Drug Busts in Paradise
Q: What happened the night of the gunfight in Barbados?
The operation went awry as traffickers opened fire during the drug landing, leading to a chaotic exchange of gunfire where the authorities fired over 600 shots, yet ultimately found no drugs, raising questions about their operational success.
6: Gunfights and Drug Busts in Paradise
Q: How important was Miami to the international drugs trade when you arrived there?
Miami was at the crossroads of international drug trafficking and was extremely busy; it represented a melting pot of drug importation and money laundering linked to South America and beyond.
