  • Decapitation in BoM

Fantastic episode! Would love to see John debate Tad Callister and all his “evidence“ that proves the BoM. And specifically focus on the literary history as related in the BoM. That would be very interesting.

  • Was good until it wasn’t

Loved the podcast until you started talking about politics 🙄

Nuanced member of the church here and don’t agree with your opinion on that aspect. Maybe leave your political opinions out of the conversation. You can’t speak for all of the nuanced Mormons. It’s very off putting.

  • Loses its own credibility

Tried an episode. Brought up good points, which is great and helpful. Also brings up stereotypes of faithful people in the church, multiple times in one episode, that are completely wrong. Loses its credibility.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep308: Sermon Magic: A Textual Analysis of The Book of Mormon
Q: Could Joseph Smith have copied from existing texts?
The discussion contends that Smith was not copying a single source but weaving techniques from sermon culture and grimoire-like practices into a new, orally produced text.
Ep308: Sermon Magic: A Textual Analysis of The Book of Mormon
Q: What role does first-person speech play in this theory?
First-person speech is presented as a deliberate performative device that underwrites the sermons and contributes to the sense of immediacy and authority, rather than reflecting an authentic ancient historiographical voice.
Ep308: Sermon Magic: A Textual Analysis of The Book of Mormon
Q: So you're saying the Book of Mormon is not ancient in origin but produced through performative dictation?
Yes. The host argues that the text is best understood as an oral, performative creation—rooted in revival sermon culture and ceremonial magic—rather than a straightforward ancient historical document.
Ep306: Q&A With Author John G. Turner author or Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet
Q: Why publish another biography of Joseph Smith now?
Turner argues the field has more material now than before and that a concise, kinetic biography can offer a fresh, readable synthesis that complements longer traditional works; there is room for multiple perspectives and new interpretations.
Ep306: Q&A With Author John G. Turner author or Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet
Q: What primary sources did you rely on, and which were most reliable?
Turner cites close-to-events sources like Violet Kimball's letters and contemporaries, while cautioning about later reminiscences that may be colored by bias; he notes the value of triangulating sources and using footnotes to clue readers into source limitations.
