  • Content so good the church excommunicated him over it.

Great content, interesting perspectives and never shying away from controversy, but the LDS church apparently really doesn’t like it.

  • Excellent source of facts

The host has a bright voice and take even of dark subjects. Never mincing words but always diplomatic when discussing controversy and the news. Providing sourced truth and bringing in educated guests.

  • Decapitation in BoM

Fantastic episode! Would love to see John debate Tad Callister and all his “evidence“ that proves the BoM. And specifically focus on the literary history as related in the BoM. That would be very interesting.

  • Was good until it wasn’t

Loved the podcast until you started talking about politics 🙄

Nuanced member of the church here and don’t agree with your opinion on that aspect. Maybe leave your political opinions out of the conversation. You can’t speak for all of the nuanced Mormons. It’s very off putting.

  • Loses its own credibility

Tried an episode. Brought up good points, which is great and helpful. Also brings up stereotypes of faithful people in the church, multiple times in one episode, that are completely wrong. Loses its credibility.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep337: Holy Disobedience: Where Seventh Day Adventism and Mormonism Intersect
Q: How did your personal beliefs evolve during the pandemic and the broader deconstruction movement?
She describes COVID as a catalyst that allowed time for reflection, leading to a deeper examination of indoctrination, control mechanisms, and the realization that human agency and curiosity are essential.
Ep332: Myth and Religion Re-examined w/Dr. John Lundwall
Q: How do Jungian collective unconscious ideas contrast with your anthropological approach to myth and culture?
Lundwall appreciates Jung but distances his work from Jungian archetypes, favoring an anthropological-historical approach that treats myth as culturally conditioned and context-dependent rather than universal psychic templates.
Ep332: Myth and Religion Re-examined w/Dr. John Lundwall
Q: Does your thesis support the idea of remnants of Hebrew or Abrahamic stories found on ancient Egyptian scrolls, as some lost-scroll theories propose?
He argues there is no evidence for a missing scroll of Abraham; the Book of Abraham was a construct of Joseph Smith, and while cosmology appears in apocrypha and other texts, there is no solid basis for a recovered Hebrew story on Egyptian scrolls.
Ep332: Myth and Religion Re-examined w/Dr. John Lundwall
Q: Can you talk about the difference between cultural evolution and the ancestral relationship between oral and literate thought?
Oral cultures encode meaning through observation of nature and ritual, using analogies and performances, while literate societies structure thought through texts; the evolution created a permanent epistemological wall between orality and literacy, with each mode offering distinct cognitive and cultural capabilities.
Ep335: The Religious Mythology of America's Founding /with author Warren Throckmorton
Q: So tell me a little bit more about the pushback against that book and the concerns historians raised.
Throckmorton explains there were numerous historical exaggerations and misrepresentations in Barton's work, leading publishers to pull the book because the facts didn't hold up, despite the material's popularity.
