  • Asset Allocation in Retirement

I really enjoyed Mark’s description and rationale for his asset allocation. It is very helpful to learn how a pro thinks through his own personal investing. I think I learn best through examples. (And, yes I understand his example might not be ideal for my needs!)

Q: Should I encourage her to contribute to her standard retirement account to achieve the additional 10% match, or should she contribute to a Roth IRA?
Mark suggests considering a Roth 401k if available, as long as it's structured well, favoring the Roth due to tax-free compounding, especially for someone in a low tax bracket.

Q: What has surprised you about Post-FI life?
Life is pretty much the same; quitting work won't magically make your life better, but you have time to work on yourself to figure out what makes you happy.

Q: What was the most embarrassing moment on the Way to FI?
I don't really have one, but at some point I stopped contributing to my 401k after the Great Recession 2008 timeframe, which in hindsight would have been a much better decision.
