  • How to build a diversified Portfolio

This episode starts with a “what if I know nothing” approach, and built up to a much more sophisticated Q and A for an investor with a $10M portfolio.

That’s what I love about these >600 episodes. There is always a new nugget you can build upon if you can stomach the redundancy (or fast forward). It reinforces sound advice about Timeframe and building the 3 key buckets: Contingency, liquidity, and growth funds.

    Thanks Roger

  • Nearing Retirement?

There are a lot of podcasts out there, but if you’re starting the think about retirement (or have already retired) this is my favorite. Roger covers the technical and emotional needs as one shifts from accumulating wealth to decumulation, and never loses focus on enjoying that retirement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Decluttering for Retirement: Why It's So Hard and How to Push Through
Q: How much weight, if any, should an individual give to foreign sentiment or global survey data when deciding between US and international equity allocations?
Surveys and sentiment data are mostly noise for long-term investing; focus on time horizon and diversification needs rather than fleeting headlines, and position in a broad, global equity exposure that aligns with long-term growth while managing risk.
Decluttering for Retirement: How a Simpler Life Helps You Rock Retirement
Q: Jason asks how risk tolerance should relate to a three-bucket retirement strategy and whether to favor a more conservative or aggressive allocation in light of decumulation.
The host recommends building allocations from the ground up with explicit buckets for emergency funds, income reserve, and long-term growth; risk tolerance questionnaires are useful mainly for education and dialogue, but in decumulation the long-term portfolio may require a different framing than traditional growth-focused models, allowing higher equity exposure if near-term needs are protected.
Decluttering for Retirement: How a Simpler Life Helps You Rock Retirement
Q: James asks about eligibility and timing for Social Security survivor benefits after his spouse's death.
The host explains survivor benefits are available based on the deceased spouse's record, notes the reduction if claimed before full retirement age, and suggests weighing the earnings test implications before deciding whether to claim survivor benefits early or wait until full retirement age to maximize lifetime benefits.
Decluttering for Retirement: How a Simpler Life Helps You Rock Retirement
Q: Justin asks about using a donor-advised fund to declutter a highly invested brokerage account and whether it makes sense given his charitable giving.
The host validates donor-advised funds as a practical decluttering tool for appreciated assets, recommending using them to move highly appreciated stock and inefficient funds out of the taxable account before directing cash donations to charities, which can improve tax efficiency and simplify the portfolio.
Decluttering for Retirement: It's More Than Cleaning Out Your Closet
Q: Is it wise to convert or rearrange Roth accounts versus spending cash now when considering retirement feasibility?
If you have a feasible plan, run one‑off scenarios to see how spending $100,000 from cash versus continuing Roth savings affects long-term feasibility; often, continuing to save in Roth provides more flexibility and potential tax-free growth later on.
