  • How to build a diversified Portfolio

This episode starts with a “what if I know nothing” approach, and built up to a much more sophisticated Q and A for an investor with a $10M portfolio.

That’s what I love about these >600 episodes. There is always a new nugget you can build upon if you can stomach the redundancy (or fast forward). It reinforces sound advice about Timeframe and building the 3 key buckets: Contingency, liquidity, and growth funds.

    Thanks Roger

  • Nearing Retirement?

There are a lot of podcasts out there, but if you’re starting the think about retirement (or have already retired) this is my favorite. Roger covers the technical and emotional needs as one shifts from accumulating wealth to decumulation, and never loses focus on enjoying that retirement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Decluttering for Retirement: It's More Than Cleaning Out Your Closet
Q: Is it wise to convert or rearrange Roth accounts versus spending cash now when considering retirement feasibility?
If you have a feasible plan, run one‑off scenarios to see how spending $100,000 from cash versus continuing Roth savings affects long-term feasibility; often, continuing to save in Roth provides more flexibility and potential tax-free growth later on.
Decluttering for Retirement: It's More Than Cleaning Out Your Closet
Q: With longevity planning, how should I balance spending today against the possibility of needing funds later in life?
Use a dual-tracking approach to longevity by evaluating scenarios at multiple ages (e.g., 83 and 90) to understand how spend and investment risk affect fundedness, and then choose options that enhance life experiences while keeping plan feasibility under control.
Listener Questions: How Do I Create a Diversified Portfolio?
Q: What are your thoughts on using allocation or balanced funds or ETFs as opposed to a portfolio of individual funds or ETFs, and should we favor global funds or US-only exposure?
The guest host explains that asset allocation funds can be great for accumulation due to simplicity and behavioral protection, especially for near-term goals, while in retirement they may be appropriate mainly for the growth portion of a portfolio. He outlines a practical framework: allocate to a contingency fund, a liquidity/income floor, and a growth portfolio, and then decide whether to use a fund-of-funds approach or individual components based on account size, tax considerations, and desire for customization. For smaller accounts, allocation funds can work well for simplicity; for larger accounts, individual pieces offer tax efficiency and customization, with a bias toward total market exposure over a pure S&P 500 for broader diversification.
Listener Questions: Should I Take Social Security Early and Invest It?
Q: Should I move my 401(k) to an advisor or a low-cost fund to avoid fees?
If the goal is to minimize fees and you're comfortable managing asset allocation and retirement analyses on your own, a low-cost mutual fund approach can be sensible; hiring an advisor should be justified by value beyond investment returns, such as planning guidance and decision support.
Listener Questions: What Should I Be Doing When I'm Two Years from Retirement?
Q: Is it better to convert to a Roth now or later if faced with Roth conversions and IRMA considerations?
Converting in down markets can still be advantageous for tax purposes; to manage IRMA, keep a buffer above the IRMA cliff and consider larger, deliberate conversions in a single year to reduce ongoing risk, while maintaining flexibility in annual planning.
