  • Nearing Retirement?

There are a lot of podcasts out there, but if you’re starting the think about retirement (or have already retired) this is my favorite. Roger covers the technical and emotional needs as one shifts from accumulating wealth to decumulation, and never loses focus on enjoying that retirement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Listener Questions: Should I Move My 401K into an IRA When I Retire?
Q: What should a new listener consider when contemplating a second career in financial coaching or advising?
Define who you want to serve, understand regulatory boundaries between coaching and advising, and start with an entry path like the Accredited Financial Counselor program, then gradually gain practical experience through volunteering and mentorship.
Listener Questions: Should I Move My 401K into an IRA When I Retire?
Q: What is a prudent approach to using retirement planning software vs. human judgment in decisions like Roth conversions near IRMA thresholds?
Software is a feasibility tool; always apply human discernment to interpret outputs, adjust inputs for edge cases, and consider gradual, multi-year Roth conversions rather than strictly following software recommendations.
Listener Questions: Should I Move My 401K into an IRA When I Retire?
Q: How should Wayne approach budgeting healthcare out-of-pocket expenses in retirement for planning tools like MoneyGuide Elite?
Use a reasonable default such as the average out-of-pocket costs for retirees, then customize based on personal health needs and medications; consider contributing to an HSA to create a tax-advantaged buffer for maximum out-of-pocket events.
Listener Questions: Should I Move My 401K into an IRA When I Retire?
Q: Is there a compelling reason to keep money in a company 401(k) when planning to retire, or should Vern move it all to Schwab IRAs?
In most cases there isn't a compelling reason to keep the 401(k) if you are not contributing and there's a risk of losing access to potential matches or future rollover considerations; consolidating into Schwab IRAs is typically sensible, but be mindful of any employer match that might need to be captured later.
Replay: How to Retire with Christine Benz
Q: What was your goal for the reader of this book?
To present retirement topics in a human, approachable way by combining non-financial aspects with financial planning, using interviews to bring in outside expertise and make the material more relatable.
