  • Pretty good

Pretty good finance podcast but sometimes broaches topics without knowing it in depth. Although he states he hasn’t gone in depth, it’s too late. Love the Dad jokes. BTW, there is no ‘t’ in across!

#210 - Q&A edition...Mega backdoor Roth contributions, nonqualified annuities, exceptions to the IRA early withdrawal penalty, when to hire an advisor, how much is too much to pay for an advisor and MORE!
Q: When is the right time to engage a planner—should a person be considering a one-time plan rather than ongoing management, especially far from retirement?
A one-time comprehensive plan can be very valuable for someone years out from retirement, providing a roadmap and actionable steps; as retirement nears, de-accumulation-focused advisers can help with distributions, benefit elections, and tax-efficient strategies. The host emphasizes matching the level of service to life-stage and goals, suggesting a one-time plan now with periodic check-ins later as needed.
#210 - Q&A edition...Mega backdoor Roth contributions, nonqualified annuities, exceptions to the IRA early withdrawal penalty, when to hire an advisor, how much is too much to pay for an advisor and MORE!
Q: If you're considering in-plan Roth conversions and there are large withholdings to cover the tax bill, is it better to forego withholding and invest those dollars instead to grow, then pay taxes later?
The host notes that withholding reduces immediate cash in hand and potential gains, and while investing instead could theoretically grow more, you must pay estimated taxes for conversions. The timing and market risk matter, and one should consider the opportunity cost as well as the risk of underpaying and triggering penalties.
#210 - Q&A edition...Mega backdoor Roth contributions, nonqualified annuities, exceptions to the IRA early withdrawal penalty, when to hire an advisor, how much is too much to pay for an advisor and MORE!
Q: My workplace allows for 401k mega backdoor Roth. I contribute after-tax money that gets immediately converted to Roth. Is this a good move and what should I watch for on the tax forms?
Converting after-tax contributions in a 401k to a Roth is generally non-taxable at the moment of conversion because the funds were already taxed; you'll receive a 1099-R showing the distribution, but Box 2A should be zero since the amount is non-taxable. Ensure Box 2B is not checked as taxable amount not determined; if there's any doubt, check with your plan administrator and consider filing the conversion details correctly on your tax return to avoid mismatches.
#209 – "Real" person retirement planning chat with Mark Ross from the Rock Retirement Club
Q: What did you do immediately after you left the city role and started the consulting business?
He describes starting with coaching for free to build certification, then gradually gaining clients, overcoming slow early momentum, and leveraging a mastermind network to formalize training and grow the practice.
#206 - Q&A edition...Social Security spousal benefits, tax withholdings on Social Security, bonds vs bond funds, separating basis out of IRAs and MORE!
Q: If her own benefit is large enough, is there any reason to switch to spousal at all?
If her own benefit, even after reductions, would always exceed the spousal base, there may be no point in switching; the decision depends on the relative size of her reduced own benefit and the spousal amount.
