  • Great Podcast!

I love listening to this podcast. Andy is very knowledgable and down to earth. I had to remove one star (and I hated to do it!) because when he does Q&A shows he’s a bit unprepared. Seems like he doesn’t review questions ahead of time and at times is unsure about his answers. But overall, a very informative and entertaining show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#199 - "Hot topics" edition...Andy and Jonathan Vance talk about opportunities in the current market environment, 2026 tax updates, questions to ask advisors and MORE!
Q: What is the core takeaway about handling market volatility for retirees?
Don't rush to alter your investment plan during downturns; assess risk tolerance, keep a long-term perspective, and use pre-planned asset allocations and Monte Carlo testing to guide adjustments.
#197 - Q&A edition...how often to rebalance, tracking Roth IRA contributions, are RMDs really that bad, paying off mortgages before retirement and MORE!
Q: What are the risks and considerations around paying off a mortgage before retirement when your tax picture could be better by keeping pretax money invested?
Paying off a mortgage with pretax money can reduce future required distributions and potential taxes, but it reduces liquidity and benefits of compounding tax-deferred assets. The decision depends on whether you value tax-efficient growth versus eliminating a fixed debt, your risk tolerance, and how it affects Medicare IRMAA; there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, and it's worth modeling across many scenarios.
#197 - Q&A edition...how often to rebalance, tracking Roth IRA contributions, are RMDs really that bad, paying off mortgages before retirement and MORE!
Q: Are RMDs really that big of a problem, or are they mainly a pain in the ass for people who have saved a lot?
RMDs can raise taxes if you are not careful with distributions and conversion planning, but they are not inherently catastrophic. The key is to structure withdrawals so you meet spending needs without unnecessarily increasing tax exposure, using strategies like Roth conversions, charitable giving, and managing required distributions with a broader plan.
#197 - Q&A edition...how often to rebalance, tracking Roth IRA contributions, are RMDs really that bad, paying off mortgages before retirement and MORE!
Q: I would love your perspective on what is a healthy frequency for doing basic maintenance and review of finances. How often is it appropriate to rebalance a portfolio? How frequently should one check account balances? What makes sense as a review cadence for looking at forecasting tools, et cetera?
A practical cadence is to rebalance at least quarterly, with a tolerance band (about ±5 to 10 percentage points around a target like 60-40). Check balances and reviews at least annually, but many advisers drift toward quarterly checks to stay aligned; use incoming/outgoing cash events as naturally occurring opportunities to rebalance and reallocate. Always predefine guardrails and thresholds so decisions aren't driven by emotion, and treat software/forecasts as guides rather than guarantees.
#195 - Retirement planner chat with Bradley Hilton from Sonas Financial Planning
Q: What is your approach to long-term care and annuities?
Bradley discusses a careful, client-centered view on long-term care and annuities, highlighting when these instruments fit a plan, the need to understand costs, and the importance of avoiding blanket recommendations.
