  • College talk, finally.

Glad to see the podcast periodically talking about paying for college , saving for college, and loans, finally. I asked a few years ago for this but they seemed irritated and allergic to talking about college. Perhaps that was to focus on a perceived singles and couples audience. Glad to see a more wholistic approach now.

First part of podcast focused on the "number" and the 4% rule. People automatically calculate what income they need using the 4% rule and the "number". But it does branch out to to very interesting topics that are not always discussed. BTW traveling is not always an effectve way to rejuvenate as you get older. Roth investments are fine if you have a 20 year or so timeline and if you are in 24% or less bracket. Thanks for not using the word trope.

  • My top podcast right now!!

I love Paula and Joe so much and have really enjoyed learning from this podcast! I’m in the insurance and financial services industry and appreciate the conversations that deep dive into topics. Their dynamic is respectful and fun and it’s apparent both have so much knowledge, along with truly building off of each others views and adds. As someone who listens to a lot of podcasts, these two are fabulous communicators and so well spoken which makes it so enjoyable. Paula has done a phenomenal job... more

  • Mostly good

I really enjoy the episodes with Joe but don’t love most of the interviews. I’m not sure why. Maybe because they are so long.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The 5 Ways Investors Behave When Things Go Wrong, with Clare Flynn Levy
Q: You talked about what separates good investors from bad investors, or successful ones from unsuccessful ones. Five archetypes of behavior—can you walk through that framework?
The five archetypes are connoisseur (lets winners run and stays invested with patience), raider (takes profits and repositions, often needing more ideas), rabbit (freezes or burrows deeper when losing), hunter (waits for a moment to strike, potentially big, calculated bets), and assassin (cuts losing positions decisively with pre-set rules). The idea is to show how people act differently depending on market conditions, and to have a plan for each scenario.
Q&A: Your Kids Just Inherited $350,000 Each. Now What?
Q: Should we pursue entrepreneurship like the gym idea to use the money?
Entrepreneurship can be viable but requires due diligence, market research, and a realistic plan; the hosts recommend doing 50 hours of due diligence, talking to multiple local practitioners, and creating a concrete plan before committing to such a venture.
Q&A: Your Kids Just Inherited $350,000 Each. Now What?
Q: How might this inheritance affect financial aid and FAFSA?
Use a structured approach: in many cases, for need-based aid the assets may count against aid eligibility; exploring options like paying tuition directly or using the funds in a way FAFSA treats as non-investment can help, but most paths that preserve aid require careful planning within the rule set and spirit of the need-based aid policies.
Q&A: Your Kids Just Inherited $350,000 Each. Now What?
Q: What should we consider for investment strategy given the inheritance and the kids' timeline?
Lock in a simple, durable asset allocation (e.g., 50-30-20 three-fund approach), avoid high-fee funds for long horizons, and focus on a clear investment policy statement rather than chasing frequent changes.
Q&A: Should I Sell One Property to Pay Off Another?
Q: Should Melissa sell the New Hampshire fourplex to pay off the Massachusetts triplex, or hold them both for the next five years?
Sell if the priority is peace of mind and a smoother financial glide path; hold if you want long-term wealth-building and potential appreciation, since the numbers can still support keeping the properties and leveraging them for future growth.
