  • Just can’t listen to one more

It is not everyone’s calling to do a podcast after retiring early. I had mile high hopes for this but it is just another self-admitted privileged white dude phoning it in. I fell for the topics and guests but the lack of thoughtful questions and blah “that’s interesting” responses and for an hour an episode?! WTF. This has to be the most uninspired FI podcast out there.

  • Doug is like podcast asparagus

Mile High FI is hands down one of my favorite podcasts. I’ve learned a lot, laughed a bunch, and even questioned my life choices somewhere between Carl’s one liners and Doug’s deep thoughts.

I do miss the Carl and Doug banter back and forth, it was was like financial broccoli and cheese. But happy to say Doug’s still killing it solo! Doug making the transition to podcast by himself is kind of like trying asparagus for the first time: Not sure what to think about it, but surprisingly satisfyin... more

  • A show about nothing

It’s like Seinfeld about FI, but without the humor.

Also they seem to advertise and sell memberships which appears to the whole point of the podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fast-Track to Freedom: Discovering FIRE Late, But Retired in 2 Years - Jennifer (Part 2) | MHFI 322
Q: How did the car accident influence your views on work and retirement?
It acted as a wake-up call, making her reevaluate the traditional 'work hard until 60' path and explore FI as a more flexible, life-centered option, especially given the fragility of life and the desire for autonomy.
Video Games & Social Security - Mailbag with Mr. Money Mustache | MHFI 320
Q: You don't actually need social security to pay for expenses in early retirement, right?
In the discussion the idea is that, for lean FIRE, you can start drawing social security early and rely on investments for the long horizon, but you don't have to depend on it to cover every expense; the key is to balance cash flow, taxes, and investments.
Optimizing the Last Year of Work Before Retirement - Rusty (Part 2) | MHFI 317
Q: What strategies were used in the last year of work to optimize 401k contributions and maximize matches?
They front-loaded contributions to capture maximum employer match and used careful timing to ensure the match was fully realized, while considering the year's end timing and any contribution limits.
Optimizing the Last Year of Work Before Retirement - Rusty (Part 2) | MHFI 317
Q: What role do securities-backed lines of credit play in retirement cash flow and avoiding forced asset sales?
Securities-backed lines of credit allow drawing against investments without selling them, reducing the chance of selling in a market trough and thereby smoothing withdrawals and preserving upside potential.
Optimizing the Last Year of Work Before Retirement - Rusty (Part 2) | MHFI 317
Q: Can you talk about the mechanics and advantages of taking out a second mortgage even when rates are higher now?
The main idea is to extract funds from home equity to invest in assets with a higher expected return, like the stock market, creating a positive delta between debt cost and investment return. It can boost liquidity and overall wealth, but requires careful math and risk awareness.
