  • Just can’t listen to one more

It is not everyone’s calling to do a podcast after retiring early. I had mile high hopes for this but it is just another self-admitted privileged white dude phoning it in. I fell for the topics and guests but the lack of thoughtful questions and blah “that’s interesting” responses and for an hour an episode?! WTF. This has to be the most uninspired FI podcast out there.

  • Doug is like podcast asparagus

Mile High FI is hands down one of my favorite podcasts. I’ve learned a lot, laughed a bunch, and even questioned my life choices somewhere between Carl’s one liners and Doug’s deep thoughts.

I do miss the Carl and Doug banter back and forth, it was was like financial broccoli and cheese. But happy to say Doug’s still killing it solo! Doug making the transition to podcast by himself is kind of like trying asparagus for the first time: Not sure what to think about it, but surprisingly satisfyin... more

  • A show about nothing

It’s like Seinfeld about FI, but without the humor.

Also they seem to advertise and sell memberships which appears to the whole point of the podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mr. Money Mustache: FIRE Planning & Investing | MHFI 323
Q: What guidance do you have on cash allocation and the role of dividends/interest in the cash reserve?
The answer emphasizes the idea that cash reserves should be sized to cover deficits, with dividends and reliable income reducing the need for large cash cushions. They argue that holding excessive cash is often suboptimal and that dynamic spending from invested assets, offset by modest cash, tends to outperform large cash holdings over time.
Mr. Money Mustache: FIRE Planning & Investing | MHFI 323
Q: How should high-earning, near-retirees think about pre-tax vs post-tax investing given their current mix and early retirement goals?
The hosts advise continuing to contribute to pre-tax accounts to capture immediate tax benefits, while also leveraging taxable and Roth accounts for flexibility. They discuss 72T penalties, backdoor Roths, and the advantage of being able to manage withdrawals and income to optimize taxes in early retirement.
Mr. Money Mustache: FIRE Planning & Investing | MHFI 323
Q: What are your general impressions about Canada versus the US in the FIRE context, especially healthcare?
Pete explains that while Canada offers free health care, it can involve wait times and less comprehensive elective coverage, and that many wealthier Canadians cross into the US for certain services. He notes cost trade-offs, climate and tax considerations, and ultimately values personal choice and perceived quality of life when deciding where to live.
Living the RV Life While Financially Independent - Kristen & Pete | MHFI 325
Q: How did your careers and remote work influence your FI journey and decision to travel full-time?
Pete discusses a long career in GIS/handyman work while Kristen works remotely for state government; their ability to work remotely gave them the flexibility to travel full-time while maintaining income and caregiving responsibilities for family.
Living the RV Life While Financially Independent - Kristen & Pete | MHFI 325
Q: When did you first start talking about FI and what sparked your interest?
Kristen explains she was introduced to FI around 2011-2012 via Mr. Money Mustache, which sparked a saver mindset that she then shared with Pete, who gradually got on board as they learned about index funds and early retirement.
