  • Much better than the average rating

Writing this review because I’m shocked the average rating of this pod isn’t higher. Not sure why, as I love Doug’s style, topics, and guests. Content probably does skew more for people who are close to or at FI, but there are always nuggets for anyone interested in FIRE.

  • Just can’t listen to one more

It is not everyone’s calling to do a podcast after retiring early. I had mile high hopes for this but it is just another self-admitted privileged white dude phoning it in. I fell for the topics and guests but the lack of thoughtful questions and blah “that’s interesting” responses and for an hour an episode?! WTF. This has to be the most uninspired FI podcast out there.

  • Doug is like podcast asparagus

Mile High FI is hands down one of my favorite podcasts. I’ve learned a lot, laughed a bunch, and even questioned my life choices somewhere between Carl’s one liners and Doug’s deep thoughts.

I do miss the Carl and Doug banter back and forth, it was was like financial broccoli and cheese. But happy to say Doug’s still killing it solo! Doug making the transition to podcast by himself is kind of like trying asparagus for the first time: Not sure what to think about it, but surprisingly satisfyin... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pursuing Passion Projects In Early Retirement - David Gillis | MHFI 328
Q: What changes are you making for the next conference to improve engagement?
I plan to add more interactivity by inserting panel discussions after multiple talks and implementing deeper Q&A so attendees can extract actionable takeaways, rather than leaving with only a good impression.
Pursuing Passion Projects In Early Retirement - David Gillis | MHFI 328
Q: Why start a conference, and how did you origin-story it?
I wanted to combine TEDx-like speaker experiences with the FI community to help people spread their messages; I drew on relationships with TEDx speakers, Camp FI organizers, and Women of Phi to craft an intimate, interactive event that could scale thoughtfully over time.
Pursuing Passion Projects In Early Retirement - David Gillis | MHFI 328
Q: What big lessons did you take from Ramsey's programs?
The primary takeaways were the relentless focus on getting out of debt and the baby-steps mindset to organize finances, set a clear end goal like financial independence, and identify the immediate next step to take.
Mr. Money Mustache: FIRE Planning & Investing | MHFI 323
Q: What guidance do you have on cash allocation and the role of dividends/interest in the cash reserve?
The answer emphasizes the idea that cash reserves should be sized to cover deficits, with dividends and reliable income reducing the need for large cash cushions. They argue that holding excessive cash is often suboptimal and that dynamic spending from invested assets, offset by modest cash, tends to outperform large cash holdings over time.
Mr. Money Mustache: FIRE Planning & Investing | MHFI 323
Q: How should high-earning, near-retirees think about pre-tax vs post-tax investing given their current mix and early retirement goals?
The hosts advise continuing to contribute to pre-tax accounts to capture immediate tax benefits, while also leveraging taxable and Roth accounts for flexibility. They discuss 72T penalties, backdoor Roths, and the advantage of being able to manage withdrawals and income to optimize taxes in early retirement.
