  • Too many ads

I started listening to this podcast in mid to late 2025. For an initial listener there is a lot of good content. However, it has quickly become repetitive. While normally that wouldn’t bother me too much, when you couple that with SO many ads, I am about ready to be done with this one.

  • Demoralizing

I’ve listened to a few episodes and found the scenarios (especially episode 705) to be too far removed from the average person’s reality. To the point of being completely demoralizing. I appreciate the resources like the spreadsheet Scott recently published for free use, but that’s about it. The advice may be useful if you are a high income earner( ep 705 - late 30s couple w/ $290k annual income & $1.9M net worth) or were able to get into real estate at 21 in the 2010 market and build from there... more

  • Please slow down and simplify- just a little!

Love the topics, research, and deep dives that Scott and Mindy offer. Very fun and professional and def pushing the FIRE movement into more sophistication and nuance. My only barrier is (sorry Scott!) when Scott adds extra details that end up making his point unclear. For example, in the de-cumulation strategies in episode 700, Scott gave extra details about brokerage accounts that made me unable to understand what he was trying to explain (eg., step up in basis, realize a gain, etc etc). While ... more

  • Enjoy the Hosts, But WOW commercials

The ratio of commercials to show time is the highest of any FI podcast I’ve come across. I want to enjoy the show, but I can only hear about Autotrader so many times before I lose my sanity. Especially when other shows are delivering similar content without the ads.

  • Decent FIRE show with some improvable flaws

I came to this show after reading Set for Life, a book I loved and got a lot of value from. This show is nice, it has good topics to listen to through the weeks to keep in touch with FIRE ideas. Some of the guests have been fantastic. Scott leads the charge and converses well. But there’s a few things that make me not want to keep listening and may potentially lose a subscribed regular listener.

    1. The ads are too much. I get you need to bring income for the show but it’s crossing the line of t... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Debate: AUM vs Flat Fee Which is Better?
Q: Will the advisor be likely to give advice that is, no, don't pay off that mortgage, keep the money with me, in that scenario?
We aim to provide unbiased advice that best suits our clients' financial goals, and are open to using funds for personal investments or mortgages based on what feels right for the client.
Debate: AUM vs Flat Fee Which is Better?
Q: What's your reaction to this from an expense standpoint to the user?
For our core client at $200,000, the AUM model is less expensive compared to flat fee. We ensure that fees are reasonable and aim for fair pricing for the value provided.
Debate: AUM vs Flat Fee Which is Better?
Q: Can you explain how the AUM fee actually works in practice and why this is a good monetization mechanism for the services that you provide?
AUM stands for Assets Under Management. We charge an annual fee based on portfolio value that is taken quarterly, starting at 0.9 percent for portfolios under $500,000, with fee breaks as assets grow.
The New FIRE? Why Time Freedom Beats Early Retirement
Q: What would you say to someone who thinks their portfolio needs to cover everything before they can think about time freedom?
I would say work that you absolutely love tends to yield better results and can feed into your investment portfolio, allowing for a more flexible lifestyle.
How to Negotiate Your Salary and Reach Financial Independence Faster | Paula Pant
Q: How do you negotiate when you really need the job?
Sometimes that negotiation might not be in the form of compensation; it might be in the form of flexibility.
