  • Binge worthy

I’m a soul care provider who has been obsessed with IFS for years, and for some reason, I never stumbled upon John’s content until last week and I have been binging a delightful week. Thank you so much for all of the free resources you offer. Incredible.

  • A Treasure for IFS Nerds (and anyone on a healing path)

John has a rare gift: he makes complex inner work feel accessible without ever watering down the depth. As someone with years of experience in the IFS model myself (fellow IFS nerd over here!), I’m continually impressed by the richness of these conversations. His guest experts—especially the live episodes with Bob Falconer—add even more perspective. What I love most is the balance: deeply professional yet warmly human. Every episode leaves me more connected to my authentic self with insights I c... more

  • Interview

I enjoy your podcast John, but in the episode with Elena Kundro, you talked way more than your guest did. She tried several times to jump in, but her efforts were not enough to change the flow. Everything you said was spot on for sure, but I wanted to hear much more about Elena’s healing journey and her practices! Maybe you could do a part 2. Thanks.

  • A Must Listen for IFS

I’ve tried several therapy modalities over the last two decades. My current therapist suggested I try IFS therapy to help with my CPTSD from childhood and other trauma.

While the style of therapy may not be a fit for everyone, I’m so glad I decided to try it. It’s very different than the typical CBT/DBT, etc. therapy.

I would say not to overthink it before you start with IFS, but do be acquainted with it. This podcast is great place to start. The host is knowledgeable, inviting, and I learned... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ADHD, Protectors, and Self-Energy: An IFS Q&A
Q: First question is from Jenny. Jenny says, every person is unique, but do you see common patterns in how many parts people tend to discover or how long integration typically takes in IFS?
Yes. IFS suggests people have around 20 to 30 parts from birth, but in practice most work with the key players, typically four to ten parts, with more trauma often yielding more polarized parts and longer work; average integration can be about 18 months.
Why Therapists Should Never Work Harder Than Clients
Q: What is the timeline for the work, can you work the model forever or are there milestones?
The host views the work as ongoing, but mentions a concept of graduating a client when they reach high self-leadership, with continued access to skills when life challenges arise, and emphasizes that ongoing guidance can help sustain progress.
Why Therapists Should Never Work Harder Than Clients
Q: Do you have any programs for people looking to deepen their practice with themselves?
The host suggests seeking in-person or group experiences led by IFS-trained therapists or peer-led groups, and notes there aren't consumer-only programs run by him, but points toward therapy and group work as paths to deepen practice.
Stop Guessing: Real vs Fake Parts Work in IFS
Q: Another live caller asks how to proceed when working with a dissociative protector that presents as persistent blankness.
Begin by identifying potential benefits of the dissociating behavior and recognizing it as a protector; then name and connect with the dissociating part to understand its role, acknowledge the risk of getting too close to vulnerability, slow the process, and ensure a safe pace so the system can re-engage with self-energy.
Stop Guessing: Real vs Fake Parts Work in IFS
Q: Ryan asks how to bring a client into body-based or parts-focused work when they default to narrating or analyzing, especially with ADHD or trauma present.
Two approaches are offered: (1) introduce a parts-based or body-focused exercise first, then disclose that it is IFS; (2) explicitly present IFS or a somatic framework to the client and gain consent, framing the model as a set of relationships with parts and self that can be practiced gradually in sessions.
