Michael Pollan’s latest book, A World Appears, is an exploration — with scientists and journalists and technologists and spiritual teachers — of what consciousness is, and is not, or might be: from the plants which have always fascinate... more

On April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech at Riverside Church in New York City called “A Time to Break Silence.” This is often referred to as his “Beyond Vietnam” Speech. His own allies criticized it as a risky departure fr... more

I'm on record bemoaning across the years that “love” is the most watered-down word in the English language. I know that invoking love feels very soft for our hard realms of politics and war. Yet it is an enduring truth that love is the ... more

I was longing for a deep dive on the radiant and common-sense hope that Jason Reynolds embodies after I interviewed him at a Georgetown event last year. I got my chance at the 2025 Aspen Ideas Festival. Jason’s perspective is so urgent ... more

I want to invite Krista to discover the cycle of infatuation, disillusionment and hopefully a dispassionate clarity regarding AI off mic and on her own time. Take it from those of us who have been there, you will cringe hearing yourself in the future.
I was deeply disappointed at the extensive use of Claude AI in this interview. And it could have almost been a reasonable experiment regarding consciousness, but Krista noted repeatedly her ongoing “conversations” with Claude. I strongly believe that the use of AI in this manner is in direct opposition to helping us explore On Being’s important questions of, “What does it mean to be human? How do we want to live? And who will we be to each other?”
…but every time she quotes Claude (in the Michael Pollan episode) I had to throw up inside a little.
AI is going to kill our minds, our jobs, nature and at last our existence.
How can you normalize it so blatantly and unreflected, in a show that is about deeper thinking and understanding the world.
If that was only to prove a point inside of the topic of consciousness, then pls frame that actively to make it clear.
Stopping that makes it 5 stars for me.
Beyond disappointed to see Krista using AI. The irony of this being a “spiritual” podcast. Lazy, tone deaf, not to mention in recent years, Krista just talks over people she is interviewing. But worth listening to the previous episode where Michelle Alexander schools Krista in a profound way.
Huge fan of Krista, so sad to hear a partnership with AI, even if it is Claude

A thoughtful, boundary-crossing interview series that threads science, spirituality, poetry, and social healing through conversations with leading thinkers, writers, scientists, and practitioners. Episodes commonly explore big questions about consciousness, meaning, love, justice, and resilience, often tying personal narrative to broader cultural and ethical questions. Notable is the ability to pair rigorous inquiry with intimate storytelling, bringing together perspectives from neuroscience, civil rights, environmentalism, and the arts to illuminate what it means to be human in turbulent times.
