Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#81 Mindset and Mental Health in OIT with Prof. Adam Fox
Q: What is the two-part approach to talking about OIT with families, and why is each part important?
The clinician explains first whether OIT is a feasible option for the child, then assesses whether it is the right choice given the family's priorities, fears, and overall health risks, ensuring informed, shared decision-making.
#79 Misconceptions, Myths & More: What Dr. Tom Chacko Wants You to Know About OIT
Q: Is there a universal 'right' age to start OIT?
No; while younger patients often have better long-term outcomes, newer data show that age alone should not determine candidacy; other factors like IgE levels and clinical factors guide the decision.
#79 Misconceptions, Myths & More: What Dr. Tom Chacko Wants You to Know About OIT
Q: What is the key takeaway about who should consider OIT and how it is tailored?
OIT is highly individualized; not all patients fit the same protocol, and decisions should be based on the patient's specific allergy, IgE levels, age, anxiety, and family goals—not a one-size-fits-all approach.
#74 Understanding FPIES with iFPIES Founder Fallon Schultz
Q: What are some of the key resources and programs you've built to help families and clinicians cope with FPIES?
She describes Lonnie's Lounge as a free tele-coaching platform offering credible information, patient-centered support, crisis awareness, and practical help like shopping, labeling guidance, and cooking demos; the Global Clinical Consortium connects clinicians worldwide and routes new findings back to families via the platform.
#74 Understanding FPIES with iFPIES Founder Fallon Schultz
Q: For people unfamiliar with FPIES, what exactly is it and how does it present beyond vomiting?
Fallon explains that FPIES is a non-IgE-mediated allergy with three phenotypes (chronic, acute, atypical) and delayed projectile vomiting two to four hours after exposure, with possible hypovolemic shock in severe cases; foods triggering FPIES can be any item, often staple foods, and there's no traditional IgE allergy signs like hives.
