Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP #157: Low-Carbon Concrete - Does the Math Actually Work?
Q: What are the main bottlenecks to scaling this technology?
Scaling requires line-of-credit and project-finance structures typical of merchant cement markets, not just off-take agreements. First plants are risk-averse, so we rely on extensive field testing, demonstrations, and educating financiers about the economics of higher output per ton of limestone intake, which helps secure larger commercial plants over time.
EP #157: Low-Carbon Concrete - Does the Math Actually Work?
Q: How is your approach different from the typical new cement startups?
We focus on being co-located with cement plants, using their feedstock and logistics to keep costs competitive. Our process captures CO2 from the kiln exhaust and reuses it to form a reactive limestone product, which can be blended or used as a full replacement, avoiding “green premium” costs while providing performance advantages.
EP #157: Low-Carbon Concrete - Does the Math Actually Work?
Q: Can you give us a little bit of background on yourself and your company?
I come from a research background in materials engineering and joined a cement-focused startup about twenty years ago to develop a cement that captures CO2. Now, at Fortera, we've evolved to a bolt-on technology for cement plants that enables significant CO2 reductions while maintaining or improving performance and economics, aiming to scale through plant adjacency and leveraging existing cement plant logistics.
EP #156: Is Rebar Killing Your Concrete Schedule?
Q: Why do reinforcement choices affect schedule more than most people realize?
TJ explains that replacing traditional rebar with fibers can reduce labor time and enable faster pouring and discharging, while procurement and inspection timing shift with the use of fibers. The true savings depend on real project conditions, design optimization, and coordination with the fiber supplier to align loads, subgrade, and finishing timing with the code requirements.
EP #154: Why Concrete Is on the Critical Path for AI Data Centers
Q: Can you explain why there's such demand for data centers, for folks who may not be familiar what data center is?
A data center is a warehouse-like facility housing four core systems—power, shell, cooling, and fiber connectivity. The demand is driven by the growth of traditional workloads, plus the surge in AI training and inference, which together push gigascale projects and require robust, scalable infrastructure.
