Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How a group credit rating dropped by £700k because of one failed acquisition with Gavin Page
Q: How did the distressed acquisition impact you personally, and how did you pivot afterward?
It was emotionally and financially draining, but it pushed me to pivot toward coaching, mentoring, and creating a boutique brokerage to help others avoid the same fate, while eventually establishing a listing side to support sale processes.
How a group credit rating dropped by £700k because of one failed acquisition with Gavin Page
Q: What were the key mistakes you made in the acquisition journey that you would warn others about?
Over-leveraging, taking on guarantees (PGs) too freely, and not having robust management leadership in place. I learned to trim leverage, reduce or avoid personal guarantees, and build a strong team around the CEO to prevent bottlenecks and risk concentration.
Buy and Build success: From employment to acquiring a £4m group
Q: What do you think is the right approach when balancing corporate experience with running a business through acquisitions?
A staged transition is crucial: maintain a handhold on the old role while gradually taking on new responsibilities, ensure the management team is informed and involved, and build trust with the staff to enable a smooth integration.
