I just had 2 nd fusion & laminator (first was 9 years ago). Before finding this podcast I was extremely depressed as I have severe arthritis and according to surgeon may need more fusions & likely will have more pain in future. Hearing how others have helped themselves heal is very inspiring and motivating. Thanks very much for creating and hosting this podcast. Now up to walk!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Microdiscectomy vs Endoscopic Discectomy: Is there a difference
Q: Who is a good candidate for endoscopic discectomy, and what factors determine whether to pursue this option?
Candidates are typically those with a clearly targeted disc herniation causing nerve compression where the anatomy allows safe endoscopic access. The decision depends on symptoms, MRI findings, and how the patient feels about potential trade-offs. If another surgery has been suggested, it's worth exploring endoscopic options first with a specialist who performs these procedures.
Microdiscectomy vs Endoscopic Discectomy: Is there a difference
Q: How is the endoscopic procedure different from a microdiscectomy, and what should a patient expect in recovery?
The core idea is that many microdiscectomies can be done through a much smaller incision using a camera-based endoscopic approach, which minimizes tissue disruption, reduces complication risk, and speeds recovery. Patients can often return to daily activities sooner and experience fewer postoperative issues compared to traditional open approaches.
A Rare Thoracic Herniated Disc And The Long Fight For A Diagnosis
Q: How did she eventually find a surgeon who could help?
She pursued extensive self-education, contacted multiple surgeons, and finally found a neurosurgeon in New York who explained the thoracic procedure and obtained insurance approval after delays; the surgery was minimally invasive and successful.
A Rare Thoracic Herniated Disc And The Long Fight For A Diagnosis
Q: What were the key symptoms that led to the thoracic diagnosis?
Symptoms included back and rib cage pain, shoulder blade pain, autonomic dysfunction when the thoracic disc pressed the spinal cord, and brain fog; the presentation was often misattributed to other issues, delaying diagnosis.
Barricade Implant Herniated Disc Recovery Story
Q: Now the Barricaid implant, did they know ahead of time or is that determined during surgery?
They didn't know until they opened up and measured the hole during the surgery; the device size was chosen on the day based on intraoperative findings.
