  • Best for dog owners!

I’m a new dog owner and I listen to tons of dog training podcasts. This one is a hidden gem and I feel it’s the best for basic practical, accessible information for pet owners. Other podcasts have a lot of theoretical discussions and seem more focused on dog trainers. Which is great and informative— but this is the podcast I find I get actual useful tips for the average dog owner. Some of the really big influencers for pet owners seem a little too flashy and a little too simplistic in their... more

  • I can’t get down with this…

The leash pulling episode - what’s the point of this podcast? There was less than 10 minutes of information. The rest is just 3 people hanging out talking about dog training. It’s like sitting at bar with 3 dog trainers talking shop and your there just to listen about their career.

  • Informative and fun!

I am getting ready to get my first dog, and not ever having grown up around dogs, I knew I needed to start getting good information so I could understand the fundamentals of dog behavior and training. I feel so much more informed about dogs after having bingeing most of the episodes! I really love the laidback conversation and the straightforward truthful approach these guys have! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

  • Love this!

Hey guys, I absolutely love your podcast! I recently became a balanced trainer and I listen to your podcast all the time. During my commute to and from work and while rocking my baby boy to sleep at night. The facility I work at aligns perfectly with your approach to dog training so I really value your insights. I also love guessing the dog barks with you, although I’m yet to get one right 😆. Thanks for taking the time to create this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Taking Audience Questions
Q: What should you do if a puppy barks in a crate and owners want to extinguish the behavior?
Owners must balance proactive training with humane handling; while some people see success by ignoring barking, the trainers advocate for initial intervention to teach calm behavior in the crate and gradually build a calmer baseline that reduces overall stress in various situations.
Taking Audience Questions
Q: Is mounting always a sign of dominance, and should it be corrected?
Mounting is not always dominance; it can be excitement or a dog asserting itself, and whether to correct depends on the specific dogs' signals, safety, and whether either dog is distressed or at risk, with emphasis on allowing dogs to advocate for themselves when appropriate.
Taking Audience Questions
Q: What do you do if a dog running the fence line won't come when called?
The suggested approach is to prioritize stopping the undesirable behavior and then training recall with controlled practice, using a combination of recall cues, close-range corrections, and alternative behaviors like coming and sitting, while ensuring the dog learns that coming to you is rewarding and safer than continuing the impulse.
Taking Audience Questions
Q: What was that smile for?
The hosts celebrate their successful handling of the question and pivot to the next topic, emphasizing the confidence built from addressing the audience and the flow of the Q&A session.
Taking Dog Training Questions From Our Listeners
Q: How long should a training session be?
Training session lengths depend on the age and familiarity of the dog with commands; for puppies, sessions should be shorter, while older dogs may handle longer sessions, so it varies widely.
