As a EOD Tech who’s currently in recovery, it was absolutely inspirational to hear Andre’s story. As a child, I watched A&E and was driven to serve those in need. Thank you Andre for inspiring me to serve, and thank you for sharing your story.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 135 Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith: Polish the Badge
Q: How do you balance being a high-performing leader with maintaining wellness and resilience within the force?
By embedding wellness into the organizational culture, normalizing conversations about trauma, and providing infrastructure—like family support and memorial foundations—that sustain officers over the long term.
Episode 135 Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith: Polish the Badge
Q: Why was creating a line-of-duty death (LODD) response team important for Kansas, and how did it come about?
It stemmed from recognizing the uneven handling of memorials and ceremonies across the state; establishing a formal framework with a dedicated team ensured consistent support for families and standardized, respectful ceremonies.
Episode 135 Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent Erik Smith: Polish the Badge
Q: What leadership philosophy did you bring to the Kansas Highway Patrol when you took over the agency?
A hybrid approach that prioritizes understanding the needs of the whole agency, articulating a clear vision, and then executing with visible, energetic leadership to build trust and morale.
Episode 132 Dallas Police Sgt. Mark Bacon #9148: Make it Last
Q: How did you end up founding the overdose unit in Dallas?
After investigating overdoses and realizing the need for a specialized, dedicated approach, he proposed creating an overdose position, gained support from leadership, and ultimately established the unit with senior approval.
Episode 132 Dallas Police Sgt. Mark Bacon #9148: Make it Last
Q: What was the turning point that led you to Dallas PD?
A combination of a retirement/benefit discussion in Texas, a favorable job market, and a sense that Dallas offered broader opportunities and a strong pension drew him to switch to the Dallas Police Department.
