  • Let the guest speak!!!!

Luann seems very well intentioned but she talks over her guests and talks way too much on those episodes. I’m listening to the one with her and Shea McGee and Shea’s barely said anything. Let your guest speak.. we want to hear them!! She keeps bringing everything back to herself and then goes into a long winded story about her. WE WANT TO HEAR THE GUEST!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

1187: WWLD: If Talent Isn’t the Problem, Why Aren’t You Getting Hired?
Q: What would Lu suggest for a designer who offers highly customized, collaborative, luxury offerings and wonders if there is a place for this model in the market?
LuAnn explains that there absolutely is a place for this level of collaboration, but it isn't for every designer or every client. The market at the top end is narrow and requires a precise, trust-led approach, prioritizing relationships with established firms, proximity, and a strong value proposition that reduces risk for the client. Success comes from targeting the right clients, building long-term relationships with architects, builders, and developers, and creating a bespoke deliverable that aligns with the client's story and the designer's process.
1185: Kia Weatherspoon: The Cost of Performing Leadership
Q: What is the core idea behind Kia's keynote, The Cost of Performing Leadership?
It centers on leadership as a humane, vulnerable practice, not a polished performance, and explores the costs to the designer and their business when leadership is performed rather than lived.
1183: BEST OF SHOW: Fred Berns: Own Your “Only” Word & Tips to Discover Yours
Q: Can you give some concrete bio examples and how to place the 'only' in them?
Examples include bios that position the designer as the area's 'only' with specific expertise (e.g., 'Montana's only luxury kitchen design specialist with 40 years experience') and suggestions to put the 'only' in bios and signature lines to maximize impact across channels.
1183: BEST OF SHOW: Fred Berns: Own Your “Only” Word & Tips to Discover Yours
Q: How do you actually determine what my 'only' is, and what are practical steps to implement it?
Dissect your business under a microscope, review competitors, identify unique combinations (e.g., 25 years experience, specialization in aging in place, or working with a certain client type), and weave those elements into bios and marketing materials.
1183: BEST OF SHOW: Fred Berns: Own Your “Only” Word & Tips to Discover Yours
Q: So Fred, talk to us about this 'only' and why it's important for each of us to figure out our 'only'.
Identify categories like awards, experience, skills, unique products, affiliations, and client niches; then craft a phrase that differentiates you in a way clients understand and value. Use concrete specifics and verify truthfulness to avoid overpromising.
