  • Let the guest speak!!!!

Luann seems very well intentioned but she talks over her guests and talks way too much on those episodes. I’m listening to the one with her and Shea McGee and Shea’s barely said anything. Let your guest speak.. we want to hear them!! She keeps bringing everything back to herself and then goes into a long winded story about her. WE WANT TO HEAR THE GUEST!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

1195: BEST OF SHOW: Campbell Minister: Building a Referral Based Interior Design Business
Q: What is Campbell's core philosophy for growing her design business?
Prioritize disciplined execution, invest in teams and processes, and keep relationships and communication front and center to build trust and generate referrals.
1194: Zach Perez & Zach Keenan: Automate Tedious Tasks and Scale Productivity with Agentic AI
Q: Tell us where your specialty lies with AI in relation to creative firms.
We focus on the administrative, tedious tasks that drain time from designers, automating those processes while keeping the creative work and client-facing aspects human-driven.
1189: Helen Bygraves: How to Grow a Design Firm to 50 People Across Two Countries
Q: What guidance would you give a young designer about attracting high-value clients and negotiating early in a project?
The guest stresses the importance of first impressions, preparedness, and giving a tangible sample of your capabilities early on. She advocates qualifying clients with thoughtful questions during discovery, listening to both what the client says and the gut intuition, and learning when to walk away from unsuitable opportunities.
1189: Helen Bygraves: How to Grow a Design Firm to 50 People Across Two Countries
Q: How did you go from a two-person start to forty people in London and nine in Dubai, and then expand across continents?
Helen explains that growth was organic, driven by seizing opportunities, smart hiring, and surrounding herself with the best talent. She emphasizes governance, mentoring, and promoting from within to scale without losing the core culture, while leveraging partnerships and a strong leadership team to manage a growing, multi-office operation.
1187: WWLD: If Talent Isn’t the Problem, Why Aren’t You Getting Hired?
Q: What would Lu suggest for a designer who offers highly customized, collaborative, luxury offerings and wonders if there is a place for this model in the market?
LuAnn explains that there absolutely is a place for this level of collaboration, but it isn't for every designer or every client. The market at the top end is narrow and requires a precise, trust-led approach, prioritizing relationships with established firms, proximity, and a strong value proposition that reduces risk for the client. Success comes from targeting the right clients, building long-term relationships with architects, builders, and developers, and creating a bespoke deliverable that aligns with the client's story and the designer's process.
