  • Beautiful but heartbreaking

Just listened to your wonderful interview with Dr. Lagu from October 2022. As a med student at Columbia, I keep learning just how much has changed in medical education. I’m sure we’ll have our own problems to overcome, but I can’t think of a single classmate who wouldn’t find these behaviors completely unconscionable. Going into medicine means sacrificing our time, mental health, freedom, and so much more, and the only thing that makes it worth it is the chance to truly make a difference. How co... more

Nice piece on 2/14! So important to integrate this effectively. Long way to go, but value based payment incentives need to structured to strengthen.

  • Love the show - very accessible, and great research highlighted!

I’m a huge fan of this show - appreciate the accessibility of the podcast for those who might not have budget for an HA subscription. Really appreciate the diversity of guests and topics covered.

I know this research base is more limited than populations of Medicare Advantage enrollees, but would love to see some highlighting of studies and research that HA has published around Medicaid managed care plans and enrollees (or health plan enterprises’ large scale approaches to serving their various... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Deadly Rise of Cold-Related Illness at the Intersection of Social Inequality
Q: What are the most important policy implications from your findings?
Key implications include expanding emergency shelter capacity and outreach, strengthening health system coordination with social services, increasing energy assistance and stable housing access, and ensuring broad health coverage, including Medicaid, to support behavioral health and acute care during extreme weather.
The Deadly Rise of Cold-Related Illness at the Intersection of Social Inequality
Q: How did you define climate-related illness in your study, and what are examples of conditions included?
We used ICD codes for climate exposure-related conditions like heat cramps, heat stroke, hypothermia, and frostbite, but also acknowledged that climate-related illness includes other conditions triggered or worsened by extreme weather, such as cardiovascular or respiratory events that may not have climate-specific codes.
The Deadly Rise of Cold-Related Illness at the Intersection of Social Inequality
Q: Tell us how climate change leads to more extreme cold events and why that matters for health policy.
Climate change alters weather patterns and can destabilize the polar vortex, allowing very cold air to plunge southward even as mean temperatures rise; these extremes create conditions for CRI, which in turn strains healthcare systems, especially for vulnerable populations.
Policy Changes Reshaping Family Caregiving
Q: What role do states and employers play in advancing caregiving policy and support, beyond federal action?
States have taken the lead on paid family leave and innovative financing approaches, such as state-run long-term care programs and private sector partnerships; employers are adopting flexible work arrangements and caregiver benefits, showing momentum that could inform federal policy as the political climate changes.
Policy Changes Reshaping Family Caregiving
Q: Can you give our listeners a sense of the current policy landscape for family caregiving, both opportunities and challenges?
The guest outlines that caregiving is increasingly recognized as a critical policy issue, with bipartisan support for investments, a growing caregiver population, and a broader framing within long-term care reform, while also noting significant risks from Medicaid funding cuts and administrative burdens that could jeopardize access to essential services.
