  • Amazing insights

Loving the relevant insights and deep cuts on the specialty coffee movement! Begun in the Covid-era, it’s interesting to gain insights through earlier episodes from operators as they were navigating that time and to see how the pod has evolved to incorporate more of the global movement of quality coffee is much appreciated as well. Cheers!

  • It’s alright

I listen now and then and like the topics covered but sometimes the balance is a little one sided. Take the most recent episode, none of the detail being mentioned by these brands was challenged. A pod machine having a lower footprint than a kettle, okay fine, but what goes into making that plastic machine that only brews one type of pod and has no other use and what’s its lifespan in comparison to a kettle. I just think a broader look into subjects could be better, rather than a sales pitch for... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An unlikely journey – a conversation with Trish Rothgeb, Wrecking Ball Coffee
Q: What lessons from your early career do you think are most relevant to today's coffee industry?
The emphasis on hands-on learning, the importance of building communities around cafes, and staying faithful to craft—combining roasting, cupping, and education with a focus on equity in the supply chain—are timeless lessons that remain highly relevant as the industry evolves.
An unlikely journey – a conversation with Trish Rothgeb, Wrecking Ball Coffee
Q: Could you share how you first became involved in coffee and what drew you to the field?
I started as an art student who worked in cafes, learned roasting hands-on, and gradually connected with mentors and pivotal figures in the scene, which blended craftsmanship with community, ultimately steering me toward founding Wrecking Ball and shaping my career around teaching, cupping, and expansion into education and innovation.
The impact of deforestation on coffee production
Q: Could you walk us through the various coffee species and how regional shifts are playing out in practice?
Arabica and Robusta remain the dominant species globally, but farmers are increasingly shifting to alternative species like Excelsa due to climate stress and profitability concerns, with regional momentum visible in places like Uganda where large-scale adoption is occurring.
Standing out from the crowd – a conversation with Gabriel Shohet, Black Sheep
Q: And what's next for Black Sheep, what are the next projects, where are we going?
Expansion remains focused on core markets (UK, US, GCC) with Saudi Arabia entering the GCC; emphasis on sourcing the best beans and delivering best-in-class customer experience rather than chasing tech trends.
Standing out from the crowd – a conversation with Gabriel Shohet, Black Sheep
Q: I wonder if you could give us a little bit of background on your own career before Black Sheep and how you got into coffee.
Gabriel Shohet describes starting from college connections, quitting office jobs to launch a coffee business, and the early days of pop-ups and B2B testing that evolved into a shop-focused model emphasizing Robusta.
