  • Rog is ruining the show!

I’m sorry but Rog’s clunky delivery is killing the show. He seems ill prepared and struggles to do anything other than repeat Pete’s points. He also struggles to hide a mindset that goes against the interests of his listeners trying to build wealth. 1. He described Rachel’s freezing of income tax thresholds as no big deal (ridiculous it’s crippling) 2. Asks for CGT rates to be aligned with income tax (truly bonkers) 3. Says pensions ‘should’ only be used to fund retirement not as a IHT vehicle. ... more

  • Why didn’t they mention restricted vs independent advisors?

This is a good podcast with helpful info but surely for the episode on ‘How to spot a good or bad financial advisor’ one of the most obvious points should be ‘is their advice independent or restricted?’ I’m really surprised they didn’t mention this and wonder why they didn’t…?

  • One of the best UK finance podcasts

I wish I’d come across Pete Matthew’s podcast years ago. But it’s never too late and has been incredibly useful for me, nevertheless. The great thing is that it has something for everyone, regardless of their life stage, so I’ve received great advice I could pass on to my 30 something son as well. Pete breaks things into what you need to KNOW and need to DO, so it build your understanding before you take action.

Pete’s been joined by the lovely Roger Weeks in recent times and Rog just adds a w... more

QA51 - Listener Questions, Episode 51
Q: Joe discusses a new CDC pension scheme, its inheritance implications, and whether Nest would be a better option; he asks for guidance on evaluating this cross-border scheme.
They acknowledge CDC schemes are hybrids that can complicate death benefits and survivor pensions. The hosts caution that CDC may not be inherently superior to Nest or traditional DC, and they recommend avoiding over-optimistic comparisons, focusing instead on the actual terms, death-and-survivor benefits, and how it fits long-term goals. They encourage Joe to seek expert cross-border planning and caution against pulling numbers from imperfect calculations without inflation, growth assumptions, and tax considerations.
QA51 - Listener Questions, Episode 51
Q: David asks about delaying DB pensions vs. drawing DC early, the effect on his wife, and how to model scenarios given a potential early retirement with ill health.
The hosts emphasize evaluating the trade-offs with live projections, focusing on guaranteed income for the wife, the impact of state pension loss, and the flexibility of the remaining DC pot. They advocate using retirement planning tools to model multiple scenarios, consider enhanced terms for ill health, and align decisions with a clear drawing strategy that balances current enjoyment with long-term security for his spouse.
QA51 - Listener Questions, Episode 51
Q: Marc asks about putting a Vitality life policy into trust for inheritance tax planning and whether it's necessary given Scotland's rules and a two-child family.
The hosts explain that whether to place a life policy in trust depends on ownership and timing: if the policy is in joint names or owned by one spouse, probate considerations change, and trusts can help avoid probate delays and keep the payout away from the estate; however, if there are critical illness components or specific product terms, a split or bespoke trust may be needed, and it's important to consider how the policy aligns with the overall goals (speed of payout, mortgage clearance, and inheritance planning).
QA52 - Listener Questions Episode 52
Q: Lisa asks for first steps after finishing an IVA, focusing on budgeting and rebuilding credit rating.
They advise building an emergency fund (500–1,000 pounds) first, deciding between overdraft or a credit card with careful management, and emphasize daily tracking of spending. They stress the importance of discipline, building credit responsibly, and balancing savings with debt management while moving toward long-term goals.
QA52 - Listener Questions Episode 52
Q: Agnes asks about taking gains from well-performing funds and how to reinvest, plus considerations around diversification and timing.
The hosts discuss that there is no single best approach; taking some gains and reinvesting can be sensible for diversification, especially when a portfolio has become concentrated in a single fund. They emphasize core and satellite investing as a strategy, cautioning against over-rotating into many funds and highlighting the benefits of diversification within a fund's holdings.
