  • Rog is ruining the show!

I’m sorry but Rog’s clunky delivery is killing the show. He seems ill prepared and struggles to do anything other than repeat Pete’s points. He also struggles to hide a mindset that goes against the interests of his listeners trying to build wealth. 1. He described Rachel’s freezing of income tax thresholds as no big deal (ridiculous it’s crippling) 2. Asks for CGT rates to be aligned with income tax (truly bonkers) 3. Says pensions ‘should’ only be used to fund retirement not as a IHT vehicle. ... more

  • Why didn’t they mention restricted vs independent advisors?

This is a good podcast with helpful info but surely for the episode on ‘How to spot a good or bad financial advisor’ one of the most obvious points should be ‘is their advice independent or restricted?’ I’m really surprised they didn’t mention this and wonder why they didn’t…?

QA57 - Listener Questions, Episode 57
Q: How should someone plan the crystallization for a house purchase when they anticipate needing 150,000 pounds of tax-free cash and 100,000 pounds for an annuity within a year?
crystallize the full pot to access a fixed 25% tax-free amount, then allocate the remainder to drawdown or other needs. If you crystallize in stages, you will reduce the available tax-free cash. If you must buy a house within 12 months, crystallize the required amount upfront (150,000) and then consider purchasing the annuity with the remaining crystallized funds, ensuring you still have sufficient cash to cover the purchase and ongoing income needs.
QA57 - Listener Questions, Episode 57
Q: What is the age and process for accessing a DC pension or SIP under the current rules, and what changes should be considered for someone who turned 55 before the rules changed?
If you turned 55 before the rule changes, you can access draws within a limited 10-week window after your 55th birthday, but you cannot crystallize new money between the change date and January 2030. You should crystallize enough to cover your immediate spending needs during that window and avoid delaying access beyond that period. The Of Plus mechanism lets you take a portion tax-free and the rest as taxable, but you must crystallize first to access any income; phased crystallization or partial tax-free cash without crystallizing all is not allowed.
QA56 - Listener Questions, Episode 56
Q: What are the considerations for IHT planning with fixed protections and potential transfers or withdrawals, and is a life policy in trust a viable strategy?
Fixed protections and their interaction with new contributions depend on when protection was granted; withdrawals above fixed protection aren't taxed differently today, but planning may involve balancing income tax, IHT, and potential legacy goals; life cover in trust can be part of a broader strategy but is not a standalone safeguard against IHT, requiring careful design and professional advice.
QA56 - Listener Questions, Episode 56
Q: How do employee contributions into a DB scheme affect the annual allowance and how should a high earner think about pension inputs when contributing to SIPs?
The pension input amount, not the employee contributions themselves, drives the annual allowance for deciding how much can be contributed; contributions into a DB scheme and SIPs interact via the pension input amount, so you should avoid double-counting employee contributions when calculating remaining allowance.
QA56 - Listener Questions, Episode 56
Q: Does crystallising pension funds for a tax-free lump sum and then drawing £12,570 per year make sense, or should UF Plus withdrawals be used from the start?
In general, only crystallise what you need now to cover immediate needs; if you don't need the tax-free cash upfront, it's better to let the pot grow and use UF Plus to balance withdrawals later, as this preserves more tax-free cash for the long term and avoids unnecessary upfront tax relief changes.
