20 Sided is my favourite podcast, for many reasons!

Jared keeps it simple, real, but is also not afraid to dive deep when the rabbit hole presents itself!

His topics are varied and interesting and I like that he reaches back to previous interviewees.

I would call his interview style “free range” which for me is very effective for exploring the hobby with the people he hosts!

Great fellow, great topics, great podcast!

    Cheers!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode #132: Designers Mark Herman and Geoff Engelstein- Versailles 1919- A Rival to Diplomacy as the Best Classroom Game?
Q: Could you explain the basic concepts of how the game works in 5-10 minutes?
The game uses two decks—issues and people—with each issue offering 2-4 options and associated icons showing the impact on happiness and unrest. Players place influence cubes on active and hallway issues to push options forward, and the most-contested issues drive the negotiation. The two regions plus a mechanism to pick the next agenda shape the strategic flow, while markers on certain issues give extra points for alignment with a country's goals.
Episode #131: Stonewall Uprising and the Fight for LGBTQ+ Rights with Game Designer Taylor Shuss!
Q: When you sit down with an idea for a game, is it usually a mechanic, a board, or a theme that drives you?
It depends on the game; sometimes a mechanic, sometimes a component, or a narrative goal, and often a combination that serves the story you want to tell, with experiential design guiding the process.
Episode #130: Max Brooks (The Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z), and Daveed Gartenstein-Ross (CEO, Expert Theory)- What Would You Do in a Zombie Apocalypse?
Q: How many teams and players were involved in the simulation they ran?
Five teams with about 18-20 players total, designed to keep group size manageable so everyone can meaningfully contribute.
Episode #122: Jim Wallman, Director of Stone Paper Scissors LtD and Master of the Megagame!
Q: Could you describe to somebody what a mega game is and what it might look like to a casual eye?
A mega game is a multi-team, interactive simulation that can resemble various formats—board games, role-playing, or map-based play—but the key is the interaction between teams, the complexity of coordinating different perspectives, and the aim of producing meaningful conversations and learning rather than a simple victory condition.
Episode #129: Simulation Design, Implementation, and the Rise of AI: An Interview with Eleanor and Jesse from Expert Theory!
Q: What do you both do?
We build and operate the Providence Platform and related services to democratize access to high-fidelity simulations, provide training through Providence Plus, and offer expert-driven, scalable game design that can run from a few participants to large, multi-day affairs.
