  • Disorganized nonsense

Has all the cohesiveness and substance of the ramblings of an unmedicated schizophrenic scrawled on the wall in feces. The hosts somehow manage to speak for, sometimes, 30 minutes or more and actually say absolutely nothing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

AWA412 - Were Cretan archers better than other archers?
Q: in response to the podcast on the Athenian archers that I did a few episodes ago, it would be interesting to hear of the effectiveness of the archers.
The host argues that while Cretan archers are repeatedly highlighted in historical sources and later warfare, the evidence suggests they were valued for specific tasks and had unique equipment and deployment, which may have contributed to a perception of superior effectiveness, but this is balanced by questions of how much of that reputation was due to selective recording, mercenary contracts, and tactical use rather than intrinsic superiority.
AWA411 - How did the Huns dress for war?
Q: Hi Murray, do we have enough information to actually describe how the Huns were dressed for war?
Murray explains that sources from Ammianus, Procopius, and Sedonius Apollinarus describe Hunnic dress using linen or skins, with evidence from burials and the Romans noting a practical, durable wardrobe. He also points out that while some depictions are austere, there are hints of color and decoration via garnets and metalwork, and acknowledges gaps in the evidence that prevent a definitive, uniform image.
AWA410 - What role and status did trumpeters have in warfare?
Q: Besides communicating orders and psychological warfare, what role and status did trumpeters have in warfare?
Trumpeters like the Celtic Karnix appear to have served as high-status battlefield signals and psychological symbols. They could issue or reinforce commands, help coordinate movements with the Aulos in some cultures, and function as emblems that inspired troops, while also bearing potential defensive sides to look out for, given their conspicuous, tall stature and ceremonial role. The size, visibility, and symbolic importance of the instruments and their bearers suggest they were more status and morale items than frontline combatants, often protected by guards and surrounded by attendants.
AWA409 - What did the Constitutio Antoniniana mean for the Roman auxilia?
Q: What do we know about the evolution of the Auxilia from the Constitutio Antoniniana to Diocletian's reforms? Were they still around with named units slowly vanishing for lack of recruits, or did they become something else by enlisting non-citizens?
The episode explains that citizenship expanded but did not erase the Auxilia; many non-citizens continued serving in auxiliary units, and even citizen auxiliaries persisted in certain units. The Antoniniana increased citizen recruitment for legions, but the Auxilia adapted by incorporating non-citizens and maintaining named units whose identities persisted into the late empire, with reforms under Diocletian further shaping their structure (e.g., Auxilia Palatina).
AWA405 - We got a fan letter!
Q: Is there evidence that decisions in ancient times were made by an actual coin flip, or is this mainly a linguistic/poetic expression?
There is limited or no solid evidence of formal coin-flip decision-making in ancient times; the discussion leans toward the idea that dice and coins served as symbolic tools for fate and chance rather than a systematic method of daily decisions.
