Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How did the Canadian Rockies form, with Nick Zentner
Q: What are the key geological blocks that make up the western Canadian Rockies and how do they relate to Alaska and the broader North American margin?
Nick outlines a cross-section in which stacked sedimentary rocks were moved and deformed by thrust faults, with multiple ages of faulting indicating successive collisions and rearrangements that pushed and relocated mountain blocks along the margin.
Writer & illustrator Vojta Hybl on the art of knowing the Earth
Q: Why did you write a book?
He describes Rocks, A Guide to the Stones Around Us and the Stories They Tell as a richly illustrated field guide that combines rigorous observation with human narratives and a focus on anthropogenic rocks to reflect our impact on geology.
Writer & illustrator Vojta Hybl on the art of knowing the Earth
Q: What do you think the scientific community misses when we isolate your kind of skill set into an other, on the other side of the fence?
He argues that science and art are deeply related and that aggressive separation limits creativity; collaboration across perspectives enriches understanding, especially for addressing climate and biodiversity challenges.
Writer & illustrator Vojta Hybl on the art of knowing the Earth
Q: Can you tell me about that?
Vojta explains his shift away from labeling himself strictly a geologist, highlighting the blend of science, art, and education that guides his career and sense of identity.
Does life regulate the Earth's atmosphere? The Gaia hypothesis with Professor Ben Mills (Part 1)
Q: What is Gaia hypothesis?
The Gaia hypothesis suggests the atmosphere and surface environment are regulated by the biosphere itself, producing a self-regulating system where biological processes influence atmospheric composition and climate in ways that tend to maintain suitable conditions for life; it includes both stabilizing feedbacks and, at times, destabilizing ones, and is interpreted through various mathematical and geochemical models.
