  • Real education for Canadians

Thank you Pam for creating this podcast! Every episode is packed full of knowledge and education. I came to the podcast wanting to learn more about indigenous nations and politics, and you delivered in such a huge way. What I wasn’t expecting was to also learn so much about Canada itself (I have learned mire about Canada from this podcast than all others combined) and how much of the violence and colonialism of “Canadian History” continues today.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Leah Gazan on Human Rights and Advocacy
Q: So, Leah, let's just pretend people are listening. And they want to know the answer to this question too. Like, well, yeah, isn't that an attack on free speech?
No, it's not. What my bill proposes to do is amend Section 319 of the Criminal Code, which already condemns Holocaust denialism.
Alan Syliboy on Mi'kmaw Art
Q: What advice do you give to young people who want to be artists?
I encourage them to practice consistently, even if it's just for 20 minutes a day, and to persevere through struggles and insecurities as it's part of the journey to becoming who they want to be.
Alan Syliboy on Mi'kmaw Art
Q: Can you talk about your journey as an artist?
I found my passion for art through my struggles in school, and it was my refuge. Influenced by mentors, especially Shirley Bear, I learned to embrace my Mi'kmaw heritage and found my voice through Petroglyphs.
Gabe Galanda on Federal Indian Blood Quantum Fiction
Q: How does disenrollment work in the tribes?
Disenrollment can occur if a tribal member is deemed not to belong, often for economic reasons, and there’s little legal recourse for those disenrolled.
Gabe Galanda on Federal Indian Blood Quantum Fiction
Q: How does it actually work? Is it a matter of just assigning an amount based on what you look like? Is it about parentage?
Blood quantum assigns percentages based on an ancestor's status and dilutes through generations, but this math is fictional and without biological basis.
