  • IDEAS is a fantastic podcast!

I’m a a CBC-phile for sure and the Ideas podcast is a favourite. When I’m not able to tune in live on a weekday day evening to CBC Radio One, I know I can always catch it here. I think that Ideas host, Nahlah Ayed, is one of our national treasures!!! Her recent series on “Revitalizing Democracy in Canada” should be required listening for every Canadian newcomer and every Canadian citizen. And I hope that our USA neighbours might find Ideas really good and important listening too!!

  • Highly recommend for your walks!

The shows are very well curated, edited and fact-checked and many of the documentaries translate academic ideas for a broad audience in an accessible way while being so interesting! Truly a Canadian classic! Thanks to the host Nahlah Ayed and all the producers, especially Nicola Luksic and Tom Howell, the producers of the series Ideas from the Trenches in the show :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How 60s Scoop 'warriors' reclaimed their Indigenous roots
Q: What is the significance of the court ruling that determined who would raise Leticia and what impact did it have?
The ruling minimized the importance of her connection to her birth family and culture, allowing for her adoption by a non-Indigenous family, which has had lasting implications for Indigenous children in similar situations.
Imprisoned Syrian wrote poetry imagining the fall of the regime. Now it's come true
Q: Can we understand Syria under 54 years of the Assad family as one huge prison, and this moment as a nationwide prison break?
Bayrakdar affirmed that not only were they aware of the imprisonment but that Syria itself was a complex prison.
Imprisoned Syrian wrote poetry imagining the fall of the regime. Now it's come true
Q: What was the source of your optimism then, when things looked so bleak?
Bayrakdar expressed faith in humanity and trust in his people, believing that nothing is eternal and regimes eventually collapse.
The natural — and unnatural — history of air on Earth
Q: What do you see is the difference between the way humanity addresses atmospheric crises like acid rain compared to climate change?
Climate change is slower and cumulative, making it harder for people to connect immediate actions to their long-term effects, unlike more visible crises.
The natural — and unnatural — history of air on Earth
Q: I guess, then if you looked beyond Earth, you know, we look to other planets, exoplanets, and we think, oh, it has an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Must be hospitable to life. But that's not a given, is it?
It's not a given; the presence of oxygen could indicate impending extinction, rather than thriving life.
