Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ambition, Authority, and Artistry: Aby Rosen
Q: What were the key challenges and opportunities when expanding from Germany to the U.S., and how did you navigate the cultural differences in business practices?
Americans are more open and transparent about deals, willing to move quickly, while Germans and Europeans tend to prefer long-term relationships and structured processes. The Frankfurt to New York transition required embracing a faster, more flexible approach while maintaining rigorous finance discipline and strong local banker relationships. Going for the best partners and maintaining decisive action helped bridge the gap.
Ambition, Authority, and Artistry: Aby Rosen
Q: Aby, it's a fantastic life story. As you mentioned, you founded RFR with a friend. Can you speak to successful partnership and how you and Michael built on each other's strengths?
Michael and I go back to kindergarten; we have different skill sets—I'm outgoing and ambitious, he's a sharp thinker and strategic. We split roles with me handling transactions and on-the-ground leadership, while he manages legal, taxation, and banking relationships. Trust and open dialogue let us push back and refine ideas, and our long history makes our partnership work even when we have disagreements.
Language, Leadership, Lineage: Arkady Suharenko
Q: What career path did Arkady consider and why engineering over medicine?
Arkady chose engineering over medicine due to a preference for more practical, less time-consuming study; he valued the ability to work with his hands and later apply his skills in Latvia's evolving economy, leading him to study at Riga Technical University and pursue engineering before shifting into banking.
Language, Leadership, Lineage: Arkady Suharenko
Q: What memory stands out about Arkady's upbringing?
Arkady focuses on growing up in a Jewish family within the Soviet context, his father's WWII service, the lack of explicit Jewish life around him at the time, and the moment when he realized and embraced his Jewish identity, which shaped his later community leadership.
Hamptons, Heritage, and Honor: Rabbi Marc Schneier
Q: What anecdote stands out from your interfaith work with Gulf states?
A defining moment was speaking on behalf of the Jewish community when Pope Francis visited Abu Dhabi in 2019, illustrating the unique intersections of interfaith dialogue and global diplomacy.
