I remember my heart stopping for a moment when I read Dockery and Son in my GCSE English Lit anthology in 1990s. But apart from hearing the odd quotation (mostly from “This Be The Verse” and taken out of context!) and absorbing the mood music that Larkin was sexist and racist, I’d barely thought about his poetry since. I love Philip Larkin and have been a big fan of this podcast for the last year!
Your start ranting system is flawed. Only 5 star maximum. These two British poets of the twentieth century together outshine all their contemporaries. They are beyond stardom. They share with us a uniVERSE of their own with their creations AN ARUNDEL TOMB and HARROW ON THE HILL. Congratulations to Jonathan Smith and his excellent interviewer.
I hope the author of BEING BETJAMEN(N) comes to Coventry next year when we are the U.K. City of Culture. I’ll buy him a pint in the LARKIN PUB.
Really enjoyed the informal chat about Larkin’s The Building. If this is a taste of what’s to come I’ll be a regular listener.
