  • A staple podcast for me

This is a podcast I relish listening to. The conversations are always wide ranging and full of depth. I also get to hear about books by women I haven’t yet read and long to read. This is a must listen for any serious lover of books and reading.

  • Gone downhill… ☹️

I used to be such a fan of all things to do with the Women’s Prize for Fiction and that included the podcast, but it’s been dumbed down to such a low level now I’m afraid I’m giving up. What on earth was the most recent episode with Bryony Gordon meant to be about? It was just utter drivel - just her droning on about herself, saying how unsuitable she is to be a judge (she’s right…) and swearing every other word. No educated discussion about her book choices, the word ‘like’ peppering every sin... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S9 Ep8: Bookshelfie: Holly Jackson
Q: What has it been like to see TV adaptations of your work and be involved in the process?
She explains she acted as an executive producer on season one, gave notes, and then had more creative control in season two where she wrote the material herself, emphasizing faithfulness to the book while allowing cinematic adaptations to explore new perspectives.
S9 Ep8: Bookshelfie: Holly Jackson
Q: How does it feel when someone lists back the accolades you've received?
Holly says she gets shy but is reminded of the scale of readers; she enjoys the validation but also keeps perspective, noting that the work is interpreted by readers and isn't solely hers.
S9 Ep1: Bookshelfie: Charli Howard
Q: Why did you pick Sleepovers as one of your bookshelf books?
Charli explains that Sleepovers resonated because it captured childhood experiences with disability, class, and friendship in a way that educated and connected with readers, showing how children's perspectives can illuminate complex social issues.
S8 Ep23: Bookshelfie: Clare Balding
Q: If you had to choose a favorite of the five that you brought today to Bookshelfie, which would it be and why?
I'd probably pick Lessons in Chemistry.
S8 Ep14: Bookshelfie: Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett
Q: Why do you think these women in particular are so good at that?
First of all, I think women are good at that. And I think women are able very well to write both men and women.
