Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#59 - What Ballet Can Teach Writers About Artistic Mastery | Lincoln Jones
Q: How do you approach writing a script about ballet, and where does daily research fit in?
The daily exposure to dancers' speech and behavior informs authentic dialogue; the story emerges from listening to them over time and tying those observations to a thematic through-line.
#59 - What Ballet Can Teach Writers About Artistic Mastery | Lincoln Jones
Q: What does it mean to partner well in ballet, and how does that skill translate to other arts?
Partnering is about enabling the partner to sustain lines and perform feats that neither could achieve alone, creating a dialogue that elevates both dancers and the overall piece.
#56 - Fear is the Engine of Every Great Story | Curtis Jobling
Q: How did your early work on Bob the Builder influence your later writing and world-building?
It showed me the importance of having ideas and IP you can own, and how to push beyond the expected preschool tropes by bringing edge and dark undertones into storytelling.
#53 - What Being a Cop Taught Me About Writing Real Characters | John Dove
Q: What was the biggest challenge in breaking into TV writing from a policing background?
Getting an agent required finishing a script and getting feedback from other writers, which led to meetings and a staff-writing opportunity; persistence and networking helped convert that into a three-year deal and a path into the writers' room.
#52 - Stress is Not a Badge of Honor (For Creatives) | Lee Papa
Q: Lee, what is a rule in our industry that you believe is worth breaking?
Rules should be seen as guidelines that can expand your creative consciousness rather than rigid boxes; breaking through perceived limits allows for authentic voice and new possibilities.
